COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Rapper Kanye West, in his first event since declaring himself a presidential candidate, ranted against historical figure Harriet Tubman on Sunday, saying the Underground Railroad conductor “never actually freed the slaves, she just had them work for other white people,” comments that drew shouts of opposition from some in the crowd. West delivered a lengthy monologue, touching on topics from abortion and religion to international trade and licensing deals, before a crowd in North Charleston, South Carolina. Whether he is actually seeking the nation’s highest office remains a question. Tubman is one of the most respected figures of 19th century America. An African American who escaped slavery, she helped enslaved Black men and women travel north to freedom and f...

Europe Said It Was Pandemic-Ready. Pride Was Its Downfall. – The New York Times

The coronavirus exposed European countries’ misplaced confidence in faulty models, bureaucratic busywork and their own wealth. By David D. Kirkpatrick, Matt Apuzzo and Selam Gebrekidan July 20, 2020 LONDON — Prof. Chris Whitty, Britain’s chief medical adviser, stood before an auditorium in a London museum two years ago cataloging deadly epidemics. From the Black Death of the 14th century to cholera in war-torn Yemen, it was a baleful history. But Professor Whitty, who had spent most of his career fighting infectious diseases in Africa, was reassuring. Britain, he said, had a special protection. “Being rich,” he explained. Wealth “massively hardens a society against epidemics,” he argued, and quality of life — food, housing, water and health care — was more effective than any medicine at ...

Enzymatica shares jump as company says mouth spray can deactivate COVID-19 – MarketWatch

Shares of Enzymatica ENZY, +62.96% jumped 67% in Stockholm as the company said preliminary results show the ability of the mouth spray ColdZyme, in vitro, to deactivate SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing the COVID-19 pandemic. The study demonstrated that ColdZyme deactivates SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus by 98.3%, the company said. "Even if the current in vitro results cannot be directly translated into clinical efficacy, it is very interesting that ColdZyme is able to effectively deactivate SARS-CoV-2 in vitro since it constitutes a proof-of-principle that can be taken further into clinical studies. Thus, the results indicate that ColdZyme can offer a protective barrier against SARS-CoV-2," says Claus Egstrand, Enzymatica's chief operating officer.

Cinemas that reopen will be subject to a strict set of rules, including screenings being limited to 30% capacity and the number of movies shown at a venue capped at 50% of its previous volume. Customers' temperatures will ...
