Interview: Amy Lee of Evanescence on inspiring legendary fanfic My Immortal – The Verge

If you mention the name “My Immortal,” you may mean one of two things. The first is the 2003 hit song from rock band Evanescence. The second is a Harry Potter fanfic so transcendentally, mysteriously bad that it’s transfixed the internet for years. The fanfic My Immortal is about a time-traveling mall-goth teenage vampire wizard (named “Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way”) who is obsessed with Evanescence and a variety of goth-inflected rock bands. She’s supposed to look like Amy Lee, Evanescence’s lead vocalist, pianist, and songwriter. And to this day, nobody is sure who wrote the story or whether they were serious. Back in the real world, Lee and the rest of Evanescence have spent months under stay-at-home orders during the coronavirus pandemic. They’ve used that time to film t...

Alex Trebek says he feels like a terrible burden on wife amid cancer battle – Page Six

Alex Trebek has good days and bad days as he battles pancreatic cancer. “There was one day a few weeks ago when [my wife] Jeanie asked me in the morning, ‘How do you feel?’ And I said, ‘I feel like I wanna die.’ It was that bad,” Trebek told ABC News. “I apologize to her and explain that it has nothing to do with my love for her or my feelings for her. “It just has to do with the fact that I feel like I’m a terrible burden to her, and that bothers me tremendously.” The “Jeopardy!” host, 79, credited his wife of 30 years for getting him through his toughest times. “She’s a saint,” said Trebek, holding back tears. “She has so much goodness in her that she is always giving out, always putting out to help me get over difficult moments. And there have been some difficult moment...

Christopher Nolan should release Tenet online – The Verge

It’s been a hard few months for Tenet fans. The $205 million film has been sidelined for weeks, as theaters have been shut down across the country due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The details of the film are shrouded in secrecy, which can’t be lifted until the film premieres — and the film itself can’t premiere until theaters reopen. In the month since Tenet’s release date was set, the US has plunged into a second wave of infections, breaking daily records set back in April — but the premiere date can only be nudged back a few weeks at a time. Unless things change again, the film is set to hit theaters on August 12th. A lot of that anticipation is coming from Christopher Nolan himself. The director has been insistent on not only debuting Tenet in a theater, but using it to hera...

More false positive tests reported in southern Vermont – WCAX

MANCHESTER, Vt. (WCAX) - Vermont health officials say more false positive test results are coming in from what initially appeared to be a surge of cases in southern Vermont. About 63 people tested positive a week ago using antigen testing done at the Manchester Medical Center. That kind of testing is appealing because of the quick results, but officials have said they may not be as accurate at detecting the virus in people who aren’t showing symptoms. We now know 33 of the 63 people with a positive antigen test have tested negative following a PCR COVID test. Two cases were confirmed positive. The health department says it has been in contact with all but seven of those 63 people. We’re told most don’t have symptoms. PCR testing was offered in Manchester and Londonderry last week as wel...

People This Age Are More Infectious, COVID-19 Study Finds – MSN Money

Since the first cases of COVID-19 were detected in Wuhan, China in December 2019, researchers have been attempting to figure out the impact children have when it comes to spreading the virus. Early on it was established that younger people are spared from serious infection compared to older, with very few children losing their lives as a result of infection.  However, it has been determined that children can be asymptomatic spreaders, infecting others despite showing zero symptoms themselves. Now, a new study just how contagious children are and at what age they can transmit the virus at the same rate as adults.  According to new research out of South Korea published in the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ...

UK coronavirus vaccine prompts immune response in early test – The Associated Press

LONDON (AP) — Scientists at Oxford University say their experimental coronavirus vaccine has been shown in an early trial to prompt a protective immune response in hundreds of people who got the shot. British researchers first began testing the vaccine in April in about 1,000 people, half of whom got the experimental vaccine. Such early trials are designed to evaluate safety and see what kind of immune response was provoked, but can’t tell if the vaccine truly protects. In research published Monday in the journal Lancet, scientists said that they found their experimental COVID-19 vaccine produced a dual immune response in people aged 18 to 55 that lasted at least two months after they were immunized. “We are seeing good immune response in almost everybody,” said Dr. Adrian Hill, director...
