Black children are more likely to die after surgery than their white peers, study says – USA TODAY

A study found Black children were more likely than white children to die after common surgeries, mirroring similar disparities found in adults. Researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio found that Black children were nearly 3.5 times more likely to die within 30 days after surgery compared to white peers. The study, published Monday in the peer-reviewed journal Pediatrics, examined national data on nearly 173,000 operations from 2012 through 2017, where appendix removal and orthopedic operations were among the most common surgeries. While there were few overall deaths, 23 Black children died within 30 days of surgery compared with 13 white children.   "Generally, we expect that healthier patients should do well with surgeries. Healthy kids have low complication r...

Grilled Radicchio and Corn Salad Recipe

Grilled Radicchio and Corn Salad with Buttermilk Cream Sauce Last year for my birthday, my wife Meg gave me this cookbook called Piatti – Plates and Platters for Sharing Inspired by Italy. For my birthday dinner that year she made 4 different dishes from this cookbook including Grilled Radicchio and Corn Salad. Every dish was perfect. Not only delicious to eat but beautiful to look at as you can see from the photo above. This year when my daughter came home from college, we duplicated three of the recipes. I would like to try every recipe in this book. They are that good, but like many home cooks, once they find a recipe they really like, you stick with it. I’ll make a point of trying some other recipes from this book including Stewed Calamari with Tomato, capers and coll...

Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet’ Delays August Release – Variety

Warner Bros. has removed “Tenet” from its release calendar, delivering a big blow on the exhibition industry at a time when movie theaters had hoped to peg their re-opening to the late summer debut of Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi thriller. Though necessary given the mass uncertainty over when cinemas across the globe can safely reopen, the decision further complicates Hollywood’s already bumpy plan to revive moviegoing. “Tenet” was originally scheduled to debut on July 17 but was pushed back twice until Aug. 12. It’s unclear when it will now welcome audiences, but the studio plans to announce a new release date “imminently.” “We will share a new 2020 release date imminently for ‘Tenet,’ Christopher Nolan’s wholly original and mind-blowing feature,” said Warner Bros. chairman Tob...

Coronavirus: Movie, TV, and entertainment industry delays and cancellations – Vox.com

The Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, which was first identified in China in December, has had sweeping effects in the public health, business, and travel sectors, among others. And while the repercussions for the entertainment industry may seem to pale in comparison to the clear threat the virus poses to human life, the ripple effects do have implications for the people around the world who make a living producing and distributing movies, music, and more. The immense and lucrative Chinese film industry was hit almost immediately as movie theaters across the country were closed and major releases were delayed. Hollywood soon began to feel the effects, too, and as time passes, the impact of the coronavirus on the global film and entertainment industries will certainly grow. Consequen...

Rapper Kanye West did not submit any of the 10,000 signatures he needed by noon Monday to get on the ballot in South Carolina for the presidential election, according to a state election official, despite holding a rally in the state one day before. Last week, West successfully got his name on the ballot as an independent in Oklahoma, where only a $35,000 filing fee is required. On Saturday, he tweeted a number of locations where supporters could sign the petition to have his name on the ballot.
