Life Through Hibiscus-Colored Glasses

Paging through Chicano Eats is a little like walking through a kaleidoscopic candy store display. Vibrant jewel tones and geometric shapes come into focus, whether you’re looking at a shelf of clay cookware or a bowl of ruby-red frijoles charros. And then there are the recipes that are literally inspired by classic Mexican candies, like the Duvalin-hued Jell-O mold, and the spicy, charred wings that take after Lucas Gusano tamarind candies. The new cookbook is by Esteban Castillo, who writes and photographs an award-winning blog of the same name. Like the blog that he founded in 2016, the book documents some of the most memorable food that Castillo grew up eating during a childhood split between Mexico and California. There are also glimpses into...

Colorado’s biggest musicians boycott Fiddler’s Green as pressure mounts against Greenwood Village police resolution – The Denver Post

From a distance, it may have looked like a breezy summer concert in an affluent Denver suburb. But the hundreds of people that gathered in the park behind Greenwood Village City Hall on Monday night weren’t just there to hear Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, the Flobots or Wesley Schultz of The Lumineers. They were there to let the Greenwood Village City Council know its resolution shielding the city’s police officers from civil liability in instances of civil rights violations won’t stand. Not if they and some of the state’s most prominent musicians have anything to say about it. The “march and play-in for justice” was the second demonstration outside Greenwood Village city hall since the council sought to undermine the state’s new accountability legislation by resolving ne...

WWE Raw star apparently done with the company – Wrestling News

Unless plans change and she is brought back for tomorrow’s TV tapings, it looks like Kari Sane is officially done with WWE. Sane wrestled an excellent match against SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley. Surprisingly, she was booked to win the match and it looked like they wanted to give her one good wrestling match before going back to Japan. As previously noted, Dave Meltzer first reported several months ago that Sane would be leaving so she could be with her husband in Japan. Sane is leaving WWE on good terms and the door is open for her to make appearances for the company, especially when they tour Japan. If WWE wanted to try to pop a rating for SmackDown, they could always book her in a rematch with Bayley for the SmackDown Women’s Championship but the post below from Natalya indicates ...

MacGyver star Lucas Till says ex-CBS producer Peter Lenkov drove him to feel suicidal – USA TODAY

"MacGyver" star Lucas Till is speaking out about his experience working with former executive producer Peter Lenkov, who was ousted from CBS earlier this month. In a Vanity Fair article published Monday, several people who used to work with Lenkov detailed their experiences with the former showrunner, alleging he created a toxic work environment. Lenkov served as executive producer on the shows "Magnum P.I.," Hawaii Five-0" and "MacGyver," before his removal from CBS on July 7. Among the many accusers was Till, who said he endured several instances of verbal abuse, bullying and body-shaming from Lenkov. “I’ve never worked this hard in my life, and I am fine with hard work,” the actor said. “But the way Peter treats people is just unacceptable." According to Till, Lenkov created such a...
