COVID-19 Chicago: Bars, restaurants, gyms prepare for reimposed restrictions amid uptick in coronavirus cases; Guthries Tavern to close – WLS-TV

CHICAGO (WLS) -- As Chicago re-imposes COVID-19 restrictions on bars, restaurants and other businesses, Guthrie's Tavern in Lakeview has announced they will close permanently. The bar announced it will close for good on Thursday after operating for the last 34 years in the 1300-block of West Addison Street. "With the new restrictions set today for bars and the ongoing COVID restrictions, we don't see a way we can survive," Guthries Tavern wrote in a Facebook post Monday evening. The corner tavern has a very special meaning to many. Meredith Weber and her husband fell in love there. Ten years later they are hoping to make back on closing day. "Actually, I was just walking by and trying to figure out how we were going to do that," Weber said. "We now have a four year old and see if we ca...

A second Great Depression? Unemployment crisis hits big cities hard – CNBC

All theater performances in New York are suspended through the remainder of 2020 due to the coronavirus outbreak. Pictured, shuttered Broadway theaters. Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images Great Depression levels of unemployment have hit some of the country's biggest cities. The coronavirus pandemic has pushed the jobless rate in New York, Los Angeles and other major urban areas to near or above 20%, nearly twice the national rate. The unemployment rate is a barometer of financial hardship for American families, since losing a job typically leads to a significant drop in household income. A rate of 20% means 1 in 5 Americans in the labor force can't find work. More from Personal Finance:Will there be a second $1,200 stimulus check?Government relief is co...

Spains coronavirus infection rate has tripled in last three weeks, officials say – Fox News

The spread of the coronavirus in Spain has tripled in the last three weeks following the easing of lockdown measures, health officials say. The virus, which infected residents there at a rate of eight per every 100,000 at the end of June, is now infecting 27 per 100,000, Reuters quoted Deputy Health Emergency Chief Maria Sierra as saying Monday. “Where measures have been relaxed is where these clusters appear,” added Health Minister Salvador Illa. “We’re talking about gatherings of extended family and spaces associated with nightlife.” People wait to enter a beach that was closed by police due to crowding in Barcelona on Saturday. Coronavirus Infections Much Higher Than Reported Cases in Parts of U.S., Study Shows – The New York Times

The number of people infected with the coronavirus in different parts of the United States is anywhere from two to 13 times higher than the reported rates for those regions, according to data released Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The findings suggest that large numbers of people who did not have symptoms or did not seek medical care may have kept the virus circulating in their communities. The study indicates that even the hardest-hit area in the study — New York City, where nearly one in four people has been exposed to the virus — is nowhere near achieving herd immunity, the level of exposure at which the virus would stop spreading in a particular city or region. Experts believe 60 percent of people in an area would need to have been exposed to the coronavi...

Scientists inch closer to blood test to detect early stage cancer – NBC News

Scientists are edging closer to developing blood tests that could detect early stage cancer, before patients show any symptoms of the disease. One such test, called PanSeer, can potentially spot five types of cancers up to four years earlier than current diagnostic methods, according to a study published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications. The test works by detecting tiny bits of DNA that tumor cells release into the bloodstream. Researchers have been working on this type of DNA sequencing application for years, and the development brings the industry a step closer to using a blood test to diagnose cancer before it progresses into advanced stages, which are more difficult to treat. “We’re turning the proof of concept stage into a commercial product that is robust, inexpe...

Elon Musk Texted Amber Heard Offering “24/7 Security” After She Claimed Johnny Depp Threw Phone At Her – Deadline

(Press Association) Elon Musk offered to provide Amber Heard with “24/7 security” and told the actress “I really like you,” the High Court has heard. The Tesla founder is said to have made the offer in May 2016, during a text message exchange in which Heard, 34, told him she was going to obtain a restraining order against Johnny Depp. In her second day of evidence in her ex-husband’s blockbuster libel action against The Sun newspaper, the Aquaman actress also dismissed suggestions Musk visited her in 2015 while Depp was away, saying she was not in touch with the entrepreneur until the following year. Depp, 57, is suing the tabloid’s publisher, News Group Newspapers (NGN) and its executive editor, Dan Wootton, over a 2018 article which labelled him a “wife beater”. R...

‘Game of Thrones’ prequel show leaks are trickling in after casting call – New York Post

There may never again be another show that has the same cultural impact as “Game of Thrones.” In 2011, when the fantasy epic premiered on HBO, Netflix had yet to release any original content, Hulu had only existed for a few years, and countless other streaming services were still just a glint in the eyes of their creators. Even HBO has since turned its streaming solution into a standalone service, and the idea of everyone gathering around the TV on the same night to watch one show is now its own fantasy. But if any show stands a chance, it might be “House of the Dragon.” Given the state of the world, you’d be forgiven for forgetting that HBO officially confirmed a “Game of Thrones” prequel series called “House of the Dragon” last fall. We know that the series was co-created by...

BTS, Coldplay, Migos, Miley Cyrus Among iHeartRadio Music Festival Performers: How the Show Will Go On (EXCLUSIVE) – Variety

For the past nine years, the iHeartRadio Music Festival has been a staple of the music calendar. Every September, for two nights on the third weekend of the month, some of the biggest names in music — among them: Bon Jovi, Bruno Mars, Fleetwood Mac, Pink, Jack White, Harry Styles and the Weeknd — converged on Las Vegas to fill an arena-full of 18,000 screaming fans (the festival started at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and has since moved to the T-Mobile Arena). The 2020 edition, of course, faces considerable challenges when it comes to a human audience, but the tenth anniversary show will go on, albeit virtually, for millions to stream on the CW app on cwtv.com or on iHeartRadio stations. Performers booked for the Sept. 18 and 19 event include BTS, Coldplay, Kane Brown with Khalid...
