Its not just dexamethasone: Other steroids may be used to treat critically ill COVID-19 patients, study says – USA TODAY

Dexamethasone isn’t the only steroid that has shown promise in the battle against the COVID-19. Researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Health System led a study where most of their patients took prednisone, another steroid in the same family as dexamethasone, and found patients with high inflammation levels were associated with a 75% reduction in risk of going on mechanical ventilation or dying. The study, published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Hospital Medicine, also sought to pinpoint a window in which these steroids would be the most beneficial to patients with COVID-19, the illness caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus. Scientists report that airborne coronavirus is probably infectious – Yahoo News

Scientists have known for several months the new coronavirus can become suspended in microdroplets expelled by patients when they speak and breathe, but until now there was no proof that these tiny particles are infectious. A new study by scientists at the University of Nebraska that was uploaded to a medical preprint site this week has shown for the first time that SARS-CoV-2 taken from microdroplets, defined as under five microns, can replicate in lab conditions. This boosts the hypothesis that normal speaking and breathing, not just coughing and sneezing, are responsible for spreading COVID-19 -- and that infectious doses of the virus can travel distances far greater than the six feet (two meters) urged by social distancing guidelines. The results are still considered preliminary and h...

Testing delays once again hamper COVID-19 response | TheHill – The Hill

Surging COVID-19 outbreaks in several states are straining testing capacity across the country as people wait several days or even weeks to get their results back, causing another setback to the U.S. response to the months-long pandemic. Lengthy turnaround times are undermining the fight against the coronavirus, experts say, making efforts to trace contacts of confirmed cases almost pointless. That, in turn, potentially leads to more infections that threaten to strain testing capacity further. “The concern is it's just starting to spiral out of control,” said Marcus Plescia, chief medical officer at the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials. While public health officials say people should be self-isolating while they wait for their test results, there’s little d...
