On Wednesday, Los Angeles Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer reported 3,266 new coronavirus cases in the region for a total of 164,870 cases. Ferrer said the 7-day average of daily new infections has more than doubled in the past month. The daily positivity rate of new tests is now 8.5 percent. “This week, I believe, could be a turning point,” said Ferrer. “COVID-19 appears to be on track to claim more lives in L.A. County than any other disease than coronary heart disease,” warned the director. Flu, she said, is nowhere near as deadly as COVID-19. Ten more people have died and more than 1,000 new cases of coronavirus in Kern County were reported Wednesday morning, as cases continue a rapid ascent locally.  Total deaths has now reached 115 in Kern and cases now exceed 11,000. The number of individuals tested is approaching 110,000 out of a countywide population of 900,000. In addition, local hospitals took in another 32 COVID-19 patients in a 48-hour period from Sunday to Tuesday, according to a state hospitalization tracker. In recent weeks, the daily number of new cases was hovering around 100 to 150 per day but on Saturday they hit just under 500 and the number has increased every day since then. In the race to find a vaccine for the coronavirus, a DeLand lab has been selected as a site for a clinical research trial. Accel Clinical Research has been chosen by the Biotech company Moderna to oversee trials of a COVID-19 vaccine."We've been absolutely ecstatic about it," said Dr. Bruce Rankin, the lab’s medical director. Rankin said they have lots of experience doing clinical trials and successfully tested a vaccine for the swine flu 11 years ago.For the coronavirus vaccine trial, they are looking for 2,500 participants between 18 and 85 years of age. Tarrant County public health reported 871 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, a record-high for the county in one day. The previous record-high number of new cases set in one day was set back on July 15 with 857 cases. Six additional deaths related to COVID-19 were reported Wednesday. That brings the total number of deaths in the county to 310. The deaths include a man in his 80s, a man in his 50s, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 70s, all from Fort Worth; a woman in her 70s from Grand Prairie and a woman in her 70s from White Settlement.
