The Pandemic’s Big Mystery: How Deadly Is the Coronavirus? – The New York Times

Instead, it had relied on a mix of data sent in by member countries and by academic groups, and on a meta-analysis done in May by scientists at the University of Wollongong and James Cook University in Australia. Those researchers looked at 267 studies in more than a dozen countries, and then chose the 25 they considered the most accurate, weighting them for accuracy and averaged the data. They concluded that the global I.F.R. was 0.64 percent. The C.D.C.’s estimate for the United States is lower: an I.F.R of 0.4 percent, according to a set of planning scenarios released in late May. The agency did not respond to requests to explain how it arrived at that figure, or why it was so much lower than the W.H.O.’s estimate. By comparison, 0.4 percent of the United States population is 1.3 milli...

Speaking to Matt Wilkinson on Apple Music’s Beats 1, Grohl recalled the process of making the album. “I actually recorded the whole thing in sequence,” he said. “I was really, really excited to do this. I mean, it was almost like a school project. I was preparing, I had charts.” He continued to reveal his favourite song from the album during those sessions, saying it was ‘Exhausted’. “I really loved the song ‘Exhausted’,” he explained. “That one came later than a lot of the other ones. The guitar sound, which is so crazy a...

Marvel and DC Are Finally Learning Why Superhero Reboots Are a Bad Idea – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Superhero reboots have become insanely commonplace these days. And in some instances, they effectively renew interest in a given hero. In other instances, audiences wind up with something like 2019’s already-forgotten Hellboy reboot. Now the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe could be shifting away from superhero reboots altogether. Michael Keaton during the filming of ‘Batman’ | Murray Close/Getty ImagesThe MCU and DCEU might both be incorporating older franchises Back in the day, the conventional wisdom was that you could only have one prominent version of a superhero out there at once. Otherwise, a company would risk either confusing audiences or oversaturating the market. It’s why characters like Batman and Wonder Woman never showed up on Smallvil...

N.J. nursing home posted ‘We beat COVID 19’ sign after 26 residents died. Now they’re apologizing. – NJ.com

Susie Flanagan is still grieving the loss of her 91-year-old mother, who died from COVID-19 in April. So it really stings when she leaves her Lopatcong Township home and passes by a sign outside her mother’s former nursing home declaring: “We beat COVID.” Her teenage kids ride past it on their bikes. Her family simply can’t escape it. The sign drives home that Nora Giordano is no longer with them. That this resident of Genesis HealthCare’s Brakeley Park Center, 290 Red School Lane, did not beat COVID-19. “Do you have to do it in the neighborhood where people live who lost their family members?” Flanagan said. “I am just really appalled.” The disease caused by the novel coronavirus took Giordano’s life and the lives of at least 25 other Brakeley Park nursing home residents, according t...
