New Clues To ALS And Alzheimers From Physics – NPR

This light micrograph from the brain of someone who died with Alzheimer's disease shows the plaques and neurofibrillary tangles that are typical of the disease. A glitch that prevents healthy cell structures from transitioning from one phase to the next might contribute to the tangles, researchers say. Brain problems linked to even mild virus infections: study – Yahoo News

Paris (AFP) - Potentially fatal COVID-19 complications in the brain including delirium, nerve damage and stroke may be more common than initially thought, a team of British-based doctors warned Wednesday. Severe COVID-19 infections are known to put patients at risk of neurological complications, but research led by University College London suggests serious problems can occur even in individuals with mild cases of the virus. The team looked at the neurological symptoms of 43 patients hospitalised with either confirmed or suspected COVID-19. They found 10 cases of temporary brain dysfunction, 12 cases of brain inflammation, eight strokes and eight cases of nerve damage. Most of those patients with inflammation were diagnosed with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) -- a rare condit...

3 Reasons You Shouldnt Get Your Hopes Too High About COVID-19 Vaccines – Motley Fool

A safe and effective vaccine would be a shot in the arm for a world that's grown weary of the COVID-19 pandemic. The good news is that there's a lot of work going on to produce just such a vaccine. At least 19 novel-coronavirus vaccine candidates are now in clinical testing, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Another 130 candidates are currently in preclinical trials. But you shouldn't get your hopes too high for COVID-19 vaccines. Here are three reasons why. Image source: Getty Images. 1. The probability of success isn't as great as you might think Many Americans assume that regulatory approval of a vaccine is right around the corner. President Donald Trump even publicly suggested that a "vaccine solution" for COVID-19 will be available "long before the end of the year...

Even without a Covid-19 vaccine, theres reason for hope – CNN

Vaccines don't act as impenetrable shields that prevent viruses from entering our bodies. Rather, they teach our bodies how to rapidly mobilize our immune defenses against a foreign invader. The rapid immune response helps us clear the virus from the body before it wreaks its damage. But in the case of Covid-19, according to one study, not everybody infected by the virus makes the neutralizing antibodies that are necessary to clear the virus and fewer still make them in high numbers. What we know from nearly 60 years of observing coronaviruses is that even if a body's immune system can clear the virus, the pathogen can likely reenter the system and cause illness again. Of the more than 100 vaccines currently in development, the ones tested on primates have not prevented nasal infe...

Disneys Pirates Noose Necklace Pulled from Collectibles Site – TMZ

Exclusive A Disney accessory depicting a noose is now in slightly less circulation after a collectibles site took action -- but the question remains ... how did this ever get made in the first place??? Back in 2006, when "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" was released, the Mouse House also dropped a limited couture jewelry line as part of the promotional rollout. It featured rings shaped out of swords, pendants made to look like locks and keys ... basically, gimmicky 'Pirates'-themed bling that sold like hot cakes. Now, one of those items was a 14k gold-plated 20" necklace with a noose pendant attached ... and it couldn't be any clearer as to what it is i...

Disney World Draws Excitement and Incredulity as Reopening Nears – The New York Times

Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., will reopen on Saturday, and Disney has been posting marketing videos online to highlight the safety procedures it has designed to protect visitors and employees. “I feel safe because Disney has gone above and beyond what they needed to do,” an employee named Sam says in one of them while standing near Fantasyland. Some of the 1,000-plus responses to that particular video were supportive. Others were incredulous, with people using words like “irresponsible” and “disappointing.” Disney World is reopening? When coronavirus infections have soared in Florida? “You gotta be kidding,” wrote Alexander Jones, a Seattle motion graphics artist. The pandemic has devastated Disney’s businesses, and reopening its signature tourist attraction — with restricted capac...

Serious brain disorders found in mild, recovering COVID-19 patients – The Jerusalem Post

Over 40 coronavirus patients in the UK who were mildly affected or recovering from the virus have suffered complications ranging from brain inflammation and delirium to nerve damage and stroke, regardless of the severity of other COVID-19 symptoms, according to data published in the journal Brain on Wednesday, The Guardian reported. Scientists at the National Hospital, Queen Square began collecting data on patients with neurological symptoms in early March amid increasing reports of neurological issues associated with the virus. Of the 43 patients whose data was collected, 10 suffered from encephalopathies with delirium and psychosis, 12 suffered from inflammatory CNS syndromes including encephalitis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) and isolated myelitis, eight su...
