Demi Lovato On New Love, New Management, And Finally Learning To Cry – Bustle

Demi Lovato imagined herself in the middle of the ocean. As the 27-year-old tread water, long black hair skimming over dark waves, she was given a command: Raise your hand if you want to lose weight. Because Lovato is a pop star who has produced nine Top 20 Billboard singles under the scrutiny of 86 million Instagram followers and a BMI-obsessed tabloid press — and because she has dealt with eating disorders for more than a decade — Lovato raised her tattooed and extravagantly nail-arted hand. While Lovato kept herself suspended in the open water with one limb, she was given another directive: Raise your hand if you’re willing to do something about your eating disorder. Because Lovato was, at that point in 2018, not in an ocean but in treatment for that eating disorder — as well as for ad...

HIV Patient Reportedly Becomes First in Remission Without a Transplant – ScienceAlert

A HIV-positive man in remission may be the first patient effectively cured of the illness without needing a bone marrow transplant, researchers said Tuesday in a potential breakthrough.   HIV affects tens of millions of people globally and while the disease is no longer the automatic death sentence it once was, patients need to take medication for life. In recent years two men - known as the "Berlin" and "London" patients - appear to have been cured of the disease after undergoing high-risk stem cell bone marrow transplants to treat cancer. Now an international team of researchers believe they may have a third patient who no longer shows sign of infection after undergoing a different medicine regimen. The patient, a 34-year-old Brazilian who has not been named, was diagnosed with HIV...

Brain problems linked to even mild coronavirus infections, UK study finds – The Times of Israel

PARIS (AFP) — Potentially fatal COVID-19 complications in the brain including delirium, nerve damage and stroke may be more common than initially thought, a team of British-based doctors warned Wednesday. Severe COVID-19 infections are known to put patients at risk of neurological complications, but research led by University College London suggests serious problems can occur even in individuals with mild cases of the virus. The team looked at the neurological symptoms of 43 patients hospitalized with either confirmed or suspected COVID-19. EPA approves Lysol products for use against coronavirus – USA TODAY

Lysol is the first surface disinfectant approved by the Environmental Protection Agency to wipe out the coronavirus.  Two versions of the common household disinfectant spray were lab tested by the agency, which found they could kill the virus on surfaces, the EPA announced. Lysol Disinfectant Spray, priced at $4.18 at Walmart, and Lysol Disinfectant Max Cover Mist, priced at $5.48, can kill the virus in under 2 minutes, the agency found.  "The EPA's approval recognizes that using Lysol Disinfectant Spray can help to prevent the spread of COVID-19 on hard, non-porous surfaces," said Rahul Kadyan, executive vice president of hygiene for Lysol's parent company Reckitt Benckiser in a statement. US sets grim record of more than 60k COVID-19 cases in a single day – Daily Mail

Texas, Florida and Arizona are now seeing an increase in COVID-19 deaths at least two weeks after the hot spot states first started seeing record spikes in cases. It comes as the United States set a grim record on Tuesday with more than 60,000 new coronavirus cases reported in a single day, up from the previous record of 53,600 infections set last Thursday. The number of cases across the US is now nearing 3 million and more than 131,000 Americans have died from COVID-19 since the pandemic took hold in March. At least 1,100 of those deaths were recorded on Tuesday, which is the highest daily increase this month. Deaths across the country have been trending downwards even as the number of infections surge to levels not seen throughout the pandemic. But the fatality rates in Texas, Arizona a...

Johnny Depp accused of slapping Amber Heard after she laughed at his Wino Forever tattoo – Page Six

Johnny Depp allegedly slapped Amber Heard three times when she laughed at how he changed a tribute tattoo to ex Winona Ryder to read “Wino Forever,” a London court heard Wednesday. Starting the second day of his explosive testimony in his libel case against The Sun, Depp, 57, was immediately accused of being a Jekyll-and-Hyde monster who turned violent during regular drink and drunk binges. The court also heard his now-infamous texts to fellow actor Paul Bettany in which he allegedly said he wanted to “burn” and “drown” Heard — then “f–k her burnt corpse.” The first alleged assault detailed came when Heard laughed at the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star’s tattoo, which first said “Winona Forever” until he changed it after their split in 1993. The laughter “provoked disappoi...

Ringo Starr Celebrates His 80th Birthday with Peace, Love, and Black Lives Matter – Rolling Stone

How did Ringo Starr decide to celebrate 80 years of 8-day weeks? By hosting his own Big Birthday Special livestream to benefit Black Lives Matter? By giving a shout out to the late Little Richard as “my hero”? By jamming on “Helter Skelter” with Paul McCartney? All of the above. It was beyond fab to see Ringo sit behind his legendary drum kit and tell a worldwide audience: “Let’s say it again: Black lives matter! Stand up and make your voice heard!” His star-studded 80th birthday bash was a celebration of Ringoism at its finest: an hour of peace and love and rock & roll, with a little help from his friends. Beatle birthdays are always festive, but this is an emotional one. Ringo is the first Beatle to blow out 80 candles and enter his number-ninth decade, in his very own Octog...

Letter signed by J.K. Rowling, Noam Chomsky warning of stifled free speech draws mixed reviews – The Washington Post

“The free exchange of information and ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is daily becoming more constricted,” states the missive, titled “A Letter on Justice and Open Debate.” “While we have come to expect this on the radical right, censoriousness is also spreading more widely in our culture: an intolerance of opposing views, a vogue for public shaming and ostracism, and the tendency to dissolve complex policy issues in a blinding moral certainty.” The letter — which boasts signatories including cultural icons such as jazz musician Wynton Marsalis, choreographer Bill T. Jones and feminist Gloria Steinem, and public figures like historian Nell Irvin Painter and author Malcolm Gladwell — drew mixed reactions on social media, igniting a heated online debate over free speech and “can...
