Coronavirus Spike Threatens LA School Reopenings, Irking Trump – Pacific Palisades, CA Patch

LOS ANGELES, CA — By week's end, Los Angeles County schools could have a series of health protocols to serve as guidelines for reopening schools, county officials announced Wednesday. The announcements follows a head-spinning series developments at the federal level this week after the Centers for Disease Control issued coronavirus protocols for schools only to provoke the ire of President Donald Trump. After Trump declared the guidelines too strict, Vice President Mike Pence announced plans to loosen them. The nation's largest school districts, Los Angeles and New York, have warned that the upcoming school year is likely to involve a measure of distance learning. According to the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer told a conference call of scho...

Health expert warns the US needs to get a handle on coronavirus before conditions return to spring levels – CNN

To prevent the outbreak from spinning out of control, US residents must focus on controlling crowds, wearing masks and doing a better job at physical distancing, Dr. Anthony Fauci told the Wall Street Journal in a podcast Wednesday. Climbing cases, sparked in part by loosened restrictions, have motivated many states to pause or roll back plans to reopen economies after widespread shutdowns in the spring. "We've got to just tighten things up, close the bars, indoor restaurants ... or make it so there's very good seating, make sure people wear masks, make sure they don't congregate in crowds, make sure they keep the distance," Fauci urged. "If you do those simple public health measures, guarantee you're going to see that curve come down. It's happened, time and again in virtually every co...

Figs and Feta Forever

Sign up for our newsletter    Figs and Feta Forever By: The TASTE Editors Photo: Laurie Ellen Pellicano Let’s recount what we know about figs. They’ve been wrapped in bacon and passed around at cocktail parties for ages. In the ’90s, we all ate a few of them showered with balsamic vinaigrette, tossed onto a plate of arugula. We’ve seen them turned into jam to pair with stinky blue cheese. And let’s face it—they can be perfect eaten completely raw, draped with a few slices of prosciutto or drizzled with a little bit of olive oil and some grains of salt. Yet there are even more chapters in the savory si...

Me, My Shelf And I

Library Text by Vivek Tejuja. Illustrations by Harjyot Khalsa I am a worrier. I worry till the cats, the dogs, the elephants and the cows come home. I worry when I am not supposed to. I get anxious. I think of the worst possible situation and apply it to my life. I even cry at the imaginary deaths of friends and family. So, you see how I worry? In the middle of it all, there is climate change to add another sweet layer of despair. I am aquaphobic: large bodies of water scare me, and I constantly think of Mumbai going under, right back into the sea on doomsday. That’s one way I definitely don’t wish to die. And, not to mention this virus (which shall not be named) that is doing the ...

White House expert, researcher see COVID-19 cases in Arizona leveling – FOX 10 News Phoenix

GLENDALE, Ariz. - One of the nation’s coronavirus hot spots got a sliver of good news on July 8 when two health experts said an exponential rise in the percentage of people testing positive for the virus in Arizona appears to have leveled off. Dr. Joshua LaBaer of Arizona State University’s Biodesign Institute tempered the news with a warning that the state’s tally of additional daily cases remains unsustainable, although it also shows a sign of leveling off. Arizona steadily has reported about 3,500 additional cases a day and hospitals are still admitting more patients than they’re discharging, he said. What’s needed is a drop in daily cases. “We don’t want to have 3,500 cases in a day, particularly when ... our hospital system is now challenged and overused at this point,” h...

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. pivots from depression to daffiness in the early 80s – The A.V. Club

Screenshot: ABC TV ReviewsAll of our TV reviews in one convenient place. I’ve said it before, but it remains true: Much of this final season of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. has felt like a victory lap, a chance for the creative team to get loose and have some fun as they coast towards the finish line. And while it hasn’t exactly resulted in the most compelling season ever, it’s been quite entertaining seeing it unfold. As with most of the installments from the first part of this season, the halfway point of the show’s time-traveling final bow looks a lot like the writers watched a few episodes of Legends Of Tomorrow and thought, “Hey, that seems fun, let’s try that.” Which is how you end up with Deke turning his new wave rock band into a wannabe bunch of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents while he and Ma...

Mary Kay Letourneaus death is a big loss for ex-Vili Fualaau, as he had a lot of love for her – Daily Mail

Vili Fualaau, the sixth-grade student that Mary Kay Letourneau raped in the 1990s and later married, 'lost a piece of himself' when she died earlier this week, a friend has revealed.   Letourneau, 58, passed away at home in Des Monies, Washington, on Monday surrounded by family members following a quiet nine-month battle with stage four colon cancer. She made headlines around the world in 1997, when the then-married 34-year-old teacher was found to be having a sexual relationship with her student, Fualaau, who at the time was just 12. The pair later wed in 2005 after she was released from prison before he filed for legal separation in 2017. Though their controversial romance never found its happily-ever-after, in the three years since their separation the pair remained close and ‘still ha...
