Country band Lady A, formerly Lady Antebellum, sues blues singer Anita White over same name – CBS News

In June, the band formerly known as Lady Antebellum announced it would change its name to Lady A to remove any association with slavery. But weeks after appearing to reach an agreement with Seattle-based blues singer Anita White, who has been using the same name for more than a decade, the country group announced on Wednesday it is suing her.  "Today we are sad to share that our sincere hope to join together with Anita White in unity and common purpose has ended," the band members of Lady A said in a statement to CBS News. "She and her team have demanded a $10 million payment, so reluctantly we have come to the conclusion that we need to ask a court to affirm our right to continue to use the name Lady A, a trademark we have held for many years." Johnny Depp accused of attacking Amber Heard for withholding meds during detox – Page Six

Johnny Depp allegedly attacked Amber Heard when she withheld his meds while he was supposed to be detoxing on his private Caribbean island, his libel trial heard Thursday. The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star went to his Little Hall’s Pond Cay in the Bahamas in August 2014 with then-fiancée Heard “acting like a nurse,” he told London’s High Court, according to the Daily Mail. He is alleged to have slapped the actress and kicked her to the ground while having “spasms” and “shakes” from coming off “Roxxies,” or Roxicodone, a brand name for the addictive opioid oxycodone. “All the sudden he’s flipping again,” Heard texted one of his doctors, according to the report. “Just starting screaming – he was so mad he pushed me and I asked him to get out,” she allegedly wrote. Vili Fualaau lost a piece of himself after ex-wife Mary Kay Letourneau died: friend – New York Post

Vili Fualaau — whom Mary Kay Letourneau raped when he was 12 years old but went on to marry and have kids with — “lost a piece of himself” when she lost her battle with cancer this week, a close friend of his said in a new interview. Fualaau’s pal told People magazine that although the pair had been apart for three years, Letourneau, 58, had kept the 37-year-old informed about her Stage 4 colon cancer and they “still had love for each other.” The former Washington state teacher achieved notoriety for her sexual relationship with the sixth-grader beginning in 1996, when police discovered them in a minivan parked in the suburban Seattle city of Des Moines Marina. Letourneau initially told police the boy was 18, raising suspicions that something sexual was going on. About two m...

California records highest single-day coronavirus toll: 149 deaths – Los Angeles Times

California recorded its highest single-day COVID-19 death toll Wednesday, with 149 fatalities reported, according to a Los Angeles Times county-by-county tally. The previous high was recorded on May 19, according to The Times’ California coronavirus tracker, when 132 deaths were tallied. For weeks, daily coronavirus deaths had remained steady even as the number of newly confirmed cases and hospitalizations have risen. It’s a trend experts believe occurred as California’s reopening accelerated in late May and people returned to pre-pandemic routines around Memorial Day, with some people not wearing masks in public and people returning to social gatherings. But experts have feared that the daily death toll would start to climb eventually, catching up with the spikes in cases and hospitaliz...

Wearing a mask cuts own risk of novel coronavirus by 65 percent, experts say – Fox News

Health experts have stressed the importance of wearing a mask to limit the possibility of infecting others with COVID-19, but a range of new research now suggests they also protect the wearer, according to a report Monday. With many states implementing policies to make face coverings mandatory in both indoor and outdoor spaces, one doctor says that masks also reduce the risk of infection to the wearer by 65 percent. "We've learned more due to research and additional scientific evidence and now we know [that] not only wearing a mask prevents the person wearing the mask to transmit to others, but wearing the mask protects the person who's wearing it," said Dean Blumberg, chief of pediatric infectious diseases at UC Davis Children’s Hospital. WHO finally acknowledges the coronavirus airborne transmission risk – BGR

Coronavirus airborne transmission is evident, 239 researchers said recently, urging the World Health Organization to acknowledge the risk. The organization said in response that there’s “emerging evidence” that the virus can spread via the air, not just the droplets that result from coughing, sneezing, and talking. But the WHO’s wording seems to suggest that it isn’t going to change its COVID-19 transmission guidelines to take into account measures that can reduce airborne spread. The World Health Organization (WHO) just acknowledged the increasing evidence that shows the coronavirus is spreading via air. The move came in response to an open letter from 239 scientists who urged the organization to acknowledge the risk of COVID-19 spread in indoor settings that are poorly v...
