A coronavirus outbreak has struck the operations of Los Angeles Apparel, with more than 300 infections and four virus-related deaths among the manufacturer’s workers, county public health officials announced Friday. In a statement Friday evening, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said that it first shut down operations at the South L.A. garment manufacturer June 27 after inspectors found “flagrant violations” of public health infection control orders and the company’s failure to cooperate with an investigation of a reported coronavirus outbreak. CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (KTRK) -- An infant has died due to coronavirus in Corpus Christi, the Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District reports. The baby boy was six weeks old. "Our deepest condolences go out to his parents and family," the Nueces County Public Health District said in a statement. District director Annette Rodriguez said the child had a co-infection and his death was identified as sudden infant death syndrome, also known as SIDS, the Corpus Christi Caller-Times reported. SAN ANTONIO -- A San Antonio doctor said one of her hospital's patients, a 30-year-old man, died after attending a so-called "COVID party" -- a bizarre trend where young people intentionally get together with someone who's infected. Dr. Jane Appleby, chief medical officer for Methodist Hospital and Methodist Children's Hospital, said the patient thought the coronavirus pandemic was a hoax. "He thought he was young and he was invincible and wouldn't get affected ... One of the things that was heart-wrenching that he said to his nurse was, 'I think I made a mistake,'" she said. U.S. infections set another daily record while new outbreaks spread across some Asian cities, challenging government efforts to contain the virus after relaxing social-distancing measures. More than 66,000 coronavirus cases were confirmed in the U.S. on Friday, the highest daily number since the pandemic began, raising the country’s total to nearly 3.2 million, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Over 90 percent of novel coronavirus samples from Arizona in a recent genetic analysis have a mutation that researchers hypothesize makes the virus more infectious. So far, researchers have analyzed more than 1,400 samples of the virus from patients with COVID-19 and have identified a mutated strain that they believe could help explain the recent explosion of cases in the state. This genetic mutation affects the spikes on the outside of the virus that the virus uses to attach to and infect host cells. Coronavirus cases, hospitalizations, and test positivity are all trending upwards in most California counties, although some regions are seeing more dramatic increases than others. Los Angeles County is currently responsible for 127,358 of the state's 304,297 confirmed cases, and has been driving much of the state's recent increases.
