Not a preservation tactic: When asked if the CDC switch was aimed at reducing pressure on the country's testing system, Giroir said the decision is based on medical science. “There is no tactic about it. It is not a result of shortages. It is unnecessary,” he said. “If we thought it was necessary to retest people, we would say so.” The exceptions: The virus may remain longer in severely ill patients who need intensive care units or are immunodeficient, according to Giroir. “Those are the ones you consult your health care provider,” he said. What’s next: Giroir said the government is “dotting the i's and crossing the t's” on the recommendations, so expect to see the CDC issue the document soon.

BILLINGS Yellowstone County Health Officer John Felton urged everyone Thursday to do their part to slow the spread of Covid-19, which has hit Yellowstone County hard in recent weeks with 14 deaths and surging numbers of positive cases. At a news conference Thursday afternoon, Felton talked about the growing number of coronavirus cases and the directive by Gov. Steve Bullock to make masks mandatory when inside public places. Felton said there are currently 440 active cases in Yellowstone County - nearly a third of all the cases in the entire state of Montana. Vermont health officials have released initial findings from COVID-19 tests being administered in an effort to determine the size of a possible outbreak in the state's southernmost counties. Health Commissioner Mark Levine joined other state officials for a private press briefing on Thursday, hesitant to label the group of positive tests as an outbreak two days after health officials' initial announcement. Hydroxychloroquine did not lead to faster symptom improvement among patients who had Covid-19 symptoms and were not hospitalized, according to a new study published Thursday in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The study, a randomized controlled trial led by researchers at the University of Minnesota, adds to the evidence that the malaria drug, heralded as a treatment based on scant data early in the pandemic, has little utility in treating Covid-19. It is likely to add to the smoldering political conflict around the drug, which President Trump said he took to prevent Covid-19 infection.
