It’s their first album for legendary indie label Sub Pop
Published Apr 12, 2022
Built to Spill have announced their ninth studio album
When the Wind Forgets Your Name, arriving September 9 on
Sub Pop. It’s the band’s debut release for the label, having spent the last 25 years on Warner Bros.
Today, Doug Martsch and co. are previewing the album with new single “Gonna Lose,” which comes attached to an animated video by Jordan Minkoff and Lee McClure. The new single is a relatively brief blast of tangled guitar and Martsch’s keening voice, and it’s unsurprisingly great.
The nine-track When the Wind Forgets Your Name was produced by Martsch and finds him backed by Le Almeida and João Cases, two members of the Brazilian psychedelic jazz-rock band Oruã who will also open for Built To Spill on their massive upcoming tour.
However, Martsch will be joined on stage by his current BTS lineup of Melanie Radford and Teresa Esguerra — if you want a preview of that show, check out Exclaim!’s recap of Martsch, Radford and Esguerra’s set at this year’s Treefort Music Festival in Boise Idaho.
When the Wind Forgets Your Name is Built to Spill’s follow-up to 2015’s Untethered Moon. Check out the video for “Gonna Lose,” plus the When the Wind Forgets Your Name tracklist and Built to Spill’s upcoming tour dates, below.
(Weird note — the record’s tracklist features two songs side by side called “Spiderweb” and “Rock Steady,” which are the names of a No Doubt song and album respectively. Is this worth pointing out? Probably not!)
