Douglas Countys COVID surge hits new high with 735 cases – KETV Omaha

The Douglas County Health Department reported 735 new positive COVID-19 cases Wednesday. That’s the highest single-day case count of 2021, and one of the five highest daily case counts since the pandemic began in March of 2020.Residents lined up again Wednesday seeking a COVID-19 test at Oak View Mall, and the Metropolitan Community Campus sites at Fort Omaha and South Omaha.Three additional deaths were attributed to COVID-19 in Douglas County, including the death of a man in his 20s who was vaccinated. The other two deaths were a man in his 40s and a man in his 70s. Douglas County Health reported neither was vaccinated.Hospitalizations for COVID-19 in the Douglas County region climbed to 296, up 20 from Tuesday’s report. Available medical and surgical bed occupancy is at 86%. There were 35 ICU beds available in the region.Douglas County Health also sought to clarify the latest guidance on COVID-19 exposure from the Centers for Disease Control. “This new guidance requires a great deal of personal responsibility for it to work,” Health Director Dr. Lindsay Huse said. “We are really counting on everyone to make the choice to do the right thing.”The Health Department says if you test positive for COVID-19, you should isolate for five days. You may return to your routine after the 5-day quarantine if you have no symptoms, but you’re advised to wear a mask for an additional five daysThose exposed to COVID-19 who are not vaccinated should follow the same routine: quarantine for five days, and wear a mask for an additional five days. The CDC says this also would apply to those who are six months or more removed from their last mRNA vaccine and have not yet received a booster shot.If you are exposed to COVID-19 and have a booster shot you do not need to quarantine, but you should wear a mask for ten days after exposure, according to the CDC.The Douglas County Health Department will offer a COVID-19 vaccine clinic at its headquarters at 1111 South 41st on Thursday, December 30th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Vaccines are widely available at pharmacies throughout the community.
