The Boys gets an early season 3 renewal, but the release will be tricky – Polygon

No spoilers for The Boys season 2, but … there’s more to the story.

During the SDCC 2020 panel for the hit comic book series, producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg showed up to announce that The Boys season 3 had already been greenlit by Amazon in anticipation of its second season, due in September.

“If you like The Boys, you’ve got more of it … thank god,” Rogen said.

According to Amazon, the “even more intense, more insane” season 2 finds The Boys on the run from the Supes, and trying to regroup to fight back against Vought. During the panel, the cast presented the first clip from the new season, in which Butcher, Hughie, and Mother’s Milk are confronted by The Deep and a giant whale, and subsequently drive a boat through the underwater beast’s blubber. It’s wicked funny.

Here’s the full synopsis for season 2:

In hiding, Hughie (Jack Quaid), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capon) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) try to adjust to a new normal, with Butcher (Karl Urban) nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, Starlight (Erin Moriarty) must navigate her place in The Seven as Homelander (Antony Starr) sets his sights on taking complete control. His power is threatened with the addition of Stormfront (Aya Cash), a social media-savvy new Supe, who has an agenda of her own. On top of that, the Supervillain threat takes center stage and makes waves as Vought seeks to capitalize on the nation’s paranoia.

As for season 3, it’s unclear when the cast and crew might get around to making it. The current situation with the coronavirus pandemic and state shutdowns leave the future unknown for the series.

“When can we film season 3?” Rogen said out loud. “Anyone’s guess. Hopefully sometime this decade!”

The first three episodes of The Boys season 2 debuts on Sept. 4. Subsequent episodes will drop on Fridays through Oct. 9.
