The Oregon Health Authority on Thursday announced 11 COVID-19 deaths and 2,242 new coronavirus cases, as well as a continued decline in hospitalizations and intensive care patients since the pandemic peaks seen in early September.
“Daily cases and hospitalizations are slowly coming down from the record highs we’ve seen over the last several weeks,” Dr. Dean Sidelinger, state epidemiologist, said at a news conference Thursday. “It’s an indication that Oregonians are once again stepping up to fend off this virus.”
In the week ended Sept. 12, the state saw an 11% decline in newly reported cases, a 42% decline in new hospitalizations after six consecutive weeks of increases, and a 32% decline in the numbers of coronavirus deaths.
That said, Sidelinger added that the state’s health care system remains under siege, that the delta variant remained a formidable threat, and that maintaining the upper hand and seeing continued declines in the numbers would depend on getting more adults vaccinated and having Oregonians maintain masking discipline.
