A Camden County man died of the West Nile virus in July, county officials said.
The man, who was in his 60s and not identified, was admitted to a hospital with symptoms of the virus on July 16. He was discharged to a sub-acute care center, where he later died, county officials said.
Although unusual, West Nile Virus is not unheard of in New Jersey. About 80% of those sickened will not develop any symptoms, and only one out of every 50 who are infected will become seriously ill.
“West Nile Virus typically affects a small number of New Jersey residents each year, however the prevalence of the virus has been increasing recently,” Camden County Health Officer Dr. Paschal Nwako said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and his family. The Camden County Department of Health is continuing to work with the Mosquito Commission to ensure that additional spraying and testing will be conducted in the area.”
Symptoms of West Nile Virus include fever, headaches, and neurological dysfunction.
The best way to avoid West Nile Virus is to limit the conditions mosquitoes breed in, like standing water, and wear EPA-approved insect repellent.
