Public health officials have continued to push for more people to receive their COVID-19 vaccination. But some health officials have said it is likely you will need a booster shot at some point within the next year. According to officials, it’s safe to expect that you would need a booster shot within 8 to 12 months of when you’re vaccinated.Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center’s associate hospital epidemiologist Dr. Jose Mercado said we will likely know more in the next few months whether his prediction comes true. He pointed to two factors: the current vaccine remaining effective against variants and how long immunity will last. Both are being studied. Then, if we do need boosters, another set of variables is created. “Before we do decide to get the boosters, we do still need to answer a couple questions,” Mercado said. “One is, does it actually boost the immune system and is it safe to do so?”He said vaccine companies are conducting those trials now. He added that studies have shown that at least the Pfizer vaccine is able to neutralize the delta variant. According to Mercado, the mRNA technology appears to be making the vaccine effective against variants.>> MORE FROM WMUR: Cheshire County Sheriff’s office enlists public opinion on hiring staff
