“The tool is a convenient option for Californians who received a COVID-19 vaccination to access their record from the state’s immunization registry systems,” the California Department of Public Health said in a news release.

The state health department recommends that Californians still hold onto their paper cards from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“If one of the state’s nearly 20 million vaccinated Californians misplaces their paper card, the Digital COVID-19 Vaccine Record provides a convenient backup,” California State Epidemiologist Dr. Erica Pan said in a prepared statement.

Here’s how to access the Digital COVID-19 Vaccine Record:

  • A person enters their name, date of birth and an email or mobile phone number associated with their vaccine record
  • After creating a four-digit PIN, the user receives a link to their vaccine record that will open after the PIN is re-entered

The record shows the same information as the paper CDC vaccine card: Name, date of birth, date of vaccinations and vaccine manufacturer.

It also includes a QR code that makes these same details readable by a QR scanner.

“Once the digital record is received, individuals are encouraged to screenshot the information and save it to their phone files or camera roll,” the state health department release goes on to say.

Gov. Gavin Newsom has avoided calling the digital records vaccine passports.

“It’s not a passport. It’s not a requirement. It’s just the ability now to have an electronic version of that paper version,” he said earlier this week.

Vaccinated people are no longer required to wear masks at most indoor locations, though the unvaccinated still must do so. Everyone must continue to wear masks in some places such as mass transit and health facilities.

Businesses can operate on an honor system in terms of who must wear masks, require everyone to wear face coverings or use a vaccine verification system.

This week, state regulators approved rules allowing fully vaccinated employees the same freedoms on and off the job, though employers can choose to keep everyone masked — vaccinated or not.
