Fauci urges vaccinations to stop delta variant; first case detected in Vermont – WCAX

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Dr. Anthony Fauci Tuesday issued an urgent new warning, saying more Americans need to be vaccinated to stop a dangerous COVID strain.

The “delta” variant was first detected in India and is thought to be more contagious and deadlier than other COVID strains. It’s responsible for more than six percent of new cases in the U.S. and a growing rate of hospitalizations compared to the virus first seen last year.

The Vermont Health Department says the variant has also been confirmed here in a returning international traveler in mid-May.

The variant is now the dominant COVID-19 strain in Britain and the military there is being deployed in some area to combat outbreaks with increased testing, community outreach, and logistical backup.

Health officials say vaccines have proven less effective against that variant when people are not fully immunized.
