On Saturday, Iowa Department of Public health announced 6,000 Iowans had died from COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.According to the IDPH website Polk, Linn and Black Hawk county had the most deaths in Iowa. The state also said 5,312 Iowans who died had underlying causes of death that initiated their death, and 688 Iowans that had a disease or condition that contributed to their death. Of the Iowans who have died from COVID-19, 459 did not have pre-existing conditions. Of those who have died from COVID-19, a majority were above the age of 70. This news comes as the state increases efforts to get Iowans vaccinated. Gov. Kim Reynolds has initiated vaccine clinics at Iowa Cubs games and the Des Moines Farmers’ Market to encourage Iowans to get vaccinated. As of Saturday, 1,255,962 Iowans have completed their vaccines. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention eased restrictions on mask usage for those who have been fully vaccinated.
