DHHS: California COVID-19 variant found in Douglas County – KETV Omaha

The first known cases of the California variant of COVID-19 have been identified in Nebraska, according to a news release from the Department of Health and Human Services. In the news release sent out Saturday afternoon, the DHHS said 13 cases of the variant known as B.1.429 have been identified across four different health jurisdictions.The DHHS said that nine of those cases are in Douglas County. According to the news release, two of the cases are in Public Health Solutions, one is in Lancaster and one is in East Central.The cases are being investigated, according to the DHHS.In the news release, the DHHS explained that less is known about the B.1.429 variant than other variants. The DHHS said that it was first identified in California and has been spreading throughout the United States.The DHHS also said it is likely that B.1.429 is more contagious.According to the DHHS, the COVID-19 vaccinations are still expected to be effective against the variant.The news of the B.1.429 variant being identified in Nebraska comes one day after it was announced that the U.K. variant was identified in the state.In a news release sent out Friday, the DHHS said the first known case of the B-117 variant of COVID-19 in Nebraska has been identified.
