The number of probable coronavirus cases in Alabama saw a jump of more than 1,600 in a day after data was added from lab that previously wasn’t reporting to the Alabama Department of Public Health.
In a statement, ADPH said it receives reports of COVID tests from commercial and clinical laboratories, as well as its own Bureau of Clinic Laboratories.
“While ADPH has long term reporting relationships with many labs in Alabama and other states, new labs have begun to provide testing for SARS-CoV-2 during the COVID-19 pandemic. There have been instances where ADPH was not aware of some of these laboratories, and these labs were not familiar with mandatory reporting of notifiable diseases,” ADPH said.
Results from two large entities, including antigen tests, increased the case numbers and probables being reported today. Probable cases rose by 1,654 to bring that total to 16,427.
Some of these results are older, ADPH said.
“As these labs were not reporting to ADPH until they understood the requirement, their data contains older reports which increases case numbers. ADPH continues to make all efforts possible to identify new labs and bring them into the electronic reporting process in order to capture the positive and negative labs for case investigation and data accuracy,” the agency said.
ADPH added probable cases to its count in June 2020. The cases are generally those identified through antigen – or “quick” – testing. Both types of cases are investigated and contacts identified in the same manner, though antigen tests are less sensitive and show more false negative than laboratory-performed tests.
Alabama also added 798 confirmed cases to bring that total to 134,231. Deaths rose by 8 to 2,357.
