The Good Morning America Summer Concert Series is going strong, even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. And to the delight of Lambs everywhere, pop diva Mariah Carey performed live on the morning program. But before she blessed the airwaves with her vocals, the singer dished a few details about her long-awaited album, The Rarities.
Mariah Carey explained why she calls the songs on her new album rarities
Carey has an excellent reason for calling her latest release, The Rarities. When speaking with Good Morning America host Michael Strahan, she explained her thought behind the album title. The artist has a rare collection of music that she has tucked away over the years, and now she has decided to share those songs with the world.
“I found stuff in my vault that I had either started to work on a long time ago and never released or that I wanted to kind of like finish mixing or do whatever,” Carey told Strahan. “But they are songs that have previously not been released, so it’s exciting, and it’s a monumental occasion for my career.”
As serious as Carey appears to take her music, she still showed off her natural sense of humor when she joked, “You know, being in this business for two years is really tough, but somehow we’ve lasted.”
Carey and Strahan shared a laugh over that quip from the music icon who dropped her first album in 1990.

Good Morning America is known for its Summer Concert Series, a seasonal event in which artists perform live concerts on the morning show. This year, the COVID-19 restrictions have made it necessary to switch to a virtual concert model.
Carey graced the show with a rendition of her very first single, “Vision of Love,” from her 1990 self-titled debut album, followed by a new song from The Rarities called “Close My Eyes.” With 30 years, and counting, in entertainment, Carey displayed the sustaining star power and talent that has defined her career.
The singer will release a memoir in fall of 2020
Carey will release her book, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, in September. In her Good Morning America interview, she described how the songs on The Rarities album and the content in the memoir complement one another.
“It’s been a labor of love. But there are a lot of very personal stories about my childhood that I think, you know, those were difficult but very cathartic as well,” Carey shared. “And the cool thing about this project is that there are songs that I talk about writing or recording even as a little kid, like starting as a little kid until now that I found in the vault. And so, we’re kind of putting this out at the same time. And I don’t want to give away too many titles or anything. But it’s exciting because they’re kind of like merged together in a really organic way.”
Fans can purchase The Meaning of Mariah Carey on Sept. 29 before picking up The Rarities on Oct. 2.
