Asuelu Pulaa and Kalani Faagata have struggled both in their marriage and in their relationships with their respective in-laws on the fifth season of TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After. During a trip to visit Asuelu’s mom, Lesina, and his half-sisters, Tammy and Rosa, in Washington, Tammy even tried to attack Kalani physically after the couple refused to give money to Lesina.
But the family—including Asuelu’s mom and sisters, as well as Kalani’s parents—tried to make amends in Asuelu and Kalani’s home state of Utah. Tammy didn’t seem to soften and even refused to apologize to her sister-in-law for suggesting that she divorce Asuelu and parent their kids, Oliver and Kennedy, on her own. But Lesina tried to mend fences and promised to try to build a better relationship with her daughter-in-law.
In a new preview of an upcoming episode of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After, Kalani and Asuelu visited his mom and sister at their vacation rental to say goodbye on the last day of their trip to Utah. While Tammy had already jumped ship and headed back without so much as a word, Asuelu’s mom seemed to try to make good on her promise to treat her son and daughter-in-law with more respect.
Asuelu’s sister left Utah without saying goodbye to her brother
In a 90 Day Fiancé sneak peek, Asuelu and Kalani headed out to visit his family one last time before they left Utah. For Kalani’s part, the mom of two was concerned about reuniting with Asuelu’s sister, Tammy, after their big fight.
“I think we both know that we don’t like each other, and we’re both just going around each other because we have to,” Kalani said apprehensively. “I don’t think she’s gonna hug me. I don’t want to hug her!”
Meanwhile, Asuelu just hoped there was “no war” between his wife and his family members when they bid farewell.
But it seemed that the couple might have been worried for no reason. When they arrived at Asuelu’s family’s rental, Lesina revealed sheepishly that Tammy had already left the state on her own earlier that morning.
Asuelu’s mom asked that her son try to “forgive Tammy” for her behavior. Still, she didn’t seem too happy with her daughter’s choice herself.
“I try to ask my daughter, Tammy, ‘Please, Asuelu is your brother. Calm down, I want you to stop your angry. Please to stay,’” Lesina told TLC producers. “But she still not listen to me.”

The ’90 Day Fiancé’ star’s mom joked about needing more money from her son
While Tammy might have made a dramatic exit, Asuelu’s mom seemed to want to stick to her promise to rebuild her relationship with her son.
Lesina asked Kalani to take care of her son and grandchildren and even thanked the couple for giving her another chance after their fight. Kalani was reserved but friendly toward her mother-in-law and seemed to have some hope that their relationship could become more cordial in the future.
“Whatever was broken in my heart is all fixed,” Lesina told Kalani and Asuelu gratefully.
But Asuelu’s mom still had more one trick up her sleeve.
“Now, we are ready to go to the airport, but please,” Lesina said with a poker face. “I need some money.”
Kalani and Asuelu looked at each other in horror, but Asuelu’s mom broke the tension by revealing it was a joke.
“Oh no, no, my kids. Just kidding!” she laughed hysterically.
Asuelu joked good-naturedly in response, snarking, “You give me a heart attack. I will not send any money to you [for giving] me a heart attack.”
“Don’t make any jokes like that,” the visibly relieved 90 Day Fiancé star admonished his mom as he hugged her goodbye.

Kalani and Asuelu hoped the relationship would continue to improve
While Asuelu admitted he was “disappointed” that Tammy left without saying goodbye, both Kalani and Asuelu hoped the Utah mini-reunion had done some good in terms of improving Kalani’s relationship with her in-laws. Asuelu said he was hopeful that the trip would help his marriage “get to a better place” as time went on.
And despite the awkwardness of her encounters with Tammy, even Kalani said she thought the weekend with her husband’s family had gone “pretty well.”
The 90 Day Fiancé star said, “We can get along for the sake of Asuelu, and he seems happier. I feel like we took a step in the right direction for our marriage, and hopefully this is the start of something good for us.”
While Kalani wasn’t completely thrilled about her relationship with her in-laws, she said she was willing to put forth the effort if it could improve Asuelu’s mental health and well-being.
