Bucatini all’Amatriciana Recipe

A Classic Roman Dish - Bucatini all'Amatriciana Like many of you, Meg and I watched the Stanley Tucci special on CNN called Searching for Italy. In the Rome episode, he has lunch at Armando Al Pantheon to enjoy their famous rigatoni all'amatriciana, one of Rome's famous pastas. I made it a little different and call it bucatini all'Amatriciana. Of course I had to run out and buy the ingredients so we could make it at home. Not a lot of ingredients and very simple to prepare and absolutely delicious. Let's look at some of the ingredients. Bucatini Bucatini is a pasta that looks a lot like spaghetti but it is thicker and has a whole running down through the strand. My kids like to say it looks like a straw made out of pasta.  If you lived in Naples, Italy, you would call...

‘Don’t Write It Off’: Advice From Brain Injury Experts After Bob Saget’s Death – The New York Times

It appeared to be an ordinary fall: Bob Saget, the actor and comedian, knocked his head on something and, perhaps thinking nothing of it, went to sleep, his family said on Wednesday. But the chilling consequences — Mr. Saget, 65, died some hours later on Jan. 9 from blunt head trauma, a medical examiner ruled — have underscored the dangers of traumatic brain injuries, even those that do not initially seem to be causes for alarm. Some 61,000 deaths in 2019 were related to traumatic brain injuries, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and nearly half of head trauma-related hospitalizations result from falls. Brain injury experts said on Thursday that Mr. Saget’s case was relatively uncommon: People with serious head trauma would be expected to have noticeable sympto...

Britains Prince Charles tests positive for COVID-19 for the 2nd time – CBS News

London — Britain's Prince Charles tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday and is self-isolating, according to a statement posted on his official Twitter account. Queen Elizabeth II's eldest son and heir to her throne canceled his public events for the day but would "look to reschedule" engagements as soon as possible, the statement said. COVID-19 infection rates in the U.K. remain high, with official statistics showing 68,214 new cases on Wednesday. However, British health authorities no longer recommend confirmatory PCR tests after a positive rapid test result, so some scientists say the official numbers are likely an underestimate.   Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, attend a reception to celebrate the British Asian Trust at the ...

ISU: Invasive mosquito species taking root in Iowa – KCCI Des Moines

Iowa State University said an invasive species of mosquito for the first time is surviving the winter in three Iowa counties, allowing the species to establish itself in the state.Mosquito surveillance efforts led by Iowa State University entomologists uncovered the invasive mosquito species known as Aedes albopictus in Lee, Des Moines and Polk counties. It was thought Iowa’s harsh winters kept the species from making a permanent home in Iowa, said Ryan Smith, an associate professor of entomology and the director of the ISU Medical Entomology Laboratory. “For a long time, it was thought that these mosquitoes wouldn’t survive the winter here,” Smith said. “Our data show they’re here, and they seem to be spreading.”ISU reports the invasive mosquitoes first showed up in the United States...

Luc Montagnier, Nobel-Winning Co-Discoverer of H.I.V., Dies at 89 – The New York Times

The Nobel committee said it had no doubt “as to who had made the fundamental discoveries” concerning H.I.V. Introducing the winners at the award ceremony in Sweden, Professor Björn Bennström, a committee member, said, “Never before had science advanced so quickly from finding the disease-causing agent to anti-viral agents.” In his acceptance speech, contrary to the views of other AIDS experts, Dr. Montagnier said he believed that H.I.V. relied on other factors to spark full-blown disease. “H.I.V. ,” he said, “is the main cause, but could also be helped by accomplices.” He was referring to other infections, perhaps from bacteria, and a weakened immune system. By then, AIDS-related illnesses had killed more than 25 million people and an estimated 33 million were living with H.I.V. After his...

Previous COVID-19 Infection – But NOT Vaccination – Improves Performance of Antibodies – SciTechDaily

By European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases February 10, 2022 Researchers also found that previously-infected patients with obesity, contrary to expectations, had a higher and more sustained immune response. New research to be presented at this year’s European Congress of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (ECCMID 2022, Lisbon, April 23-26) shows that, although over time the number of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies falls in both previously infected and vaccinated patients, the performance of antibodies improves only after previous infection (and not vaccination). This difference could explain why previously infected patients appear to be better protected against a new infection than those who have only been vaccinated. The study, by Dr. Carmit Co...
