Possible Achilles’ Heel Discovered for Respiratory Viruses – Like COVID-19 – That Hijack Immune Mechanisms – SciTechDaily

One viral protein could provide information to deter pneumonia causing the body’s exaggerated inflammatory response to respiratory viruses, including the virus that causes COVID-19. That viral protein is NS2 of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and a study has found that if the virus lacks this protein, the human body’s immune response can destroy the virus before exaggerated inflammation begins. The research, conducted at Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, was published January 18, 2022, in the journal MBio. Like other respiratory viruses, including the COVID-19-causing SARS-CoV-2 virus, RSV infects the lung cells responsible for exchanging gases and uses them as factories to make more viruses. Uncontrollable virus multiplication in these cells lea...

Jamie Lynn Spears shares recent apology text she claims Britney sent her – Page Six

Jamie Lynn Spears claims to have received an apology from her estranged sister, Britney Spears — and shares the text message with the public in her new memoir. “In a recent text from my sister, she stated herself: ‘I know it’s not your fault and I’m sorry for being so angry at you. Although I’m your big sister, I need you more than you need me and always have,'” the former “Zoey 101” star writes in “Things I Should Have Said.” Britney’s rep did not respond when Page Six reached out to confirm the authenticity of the message. The Spears sisters have been at odds for years, as Britney, 40, felt that Jamie Lynn, 30, was not there for her during her conservatorship battle. While it is unclear when the pop star sent the alleged mea culpa, the actress inc...

Joss Whedon breaks silence over Justice League allegations, calling Ray Fisher ‘bad actor in two senses’ – The Independent

Joss Whedon has broken his silence over claims of misconduct on the set of Justice League. In 2020, Fisher, who played Cyborg in Whedon’s Justice League, alleged that the director engaged in “gross, abusive, unprofessional and completely unacceptable” behaviour on the set of the 2017 film. Fisher shared an archive video of himself calling Whedon a “great guy”, writing: “I’d like to take a moment to forcefully retract every bit of this statement.” It was also claimed that he lightened Fisher’s skin tone during the edit. His allegations led to a WarnerMedia investigation into Whedon’s behaviour, which saw many actors who have worked with the director in the past, including Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot, interviewed by officials. Whedon initially failed to comment on Fisher’s allegations. ...

A Better Pancake Is Possible

There’s something deeply poignant about Liza Treyger’s joke about ordering pancakes for the table. During her stand-up set for Late Night with Seth Meyers in 2016, she describes the act as a “power move.” With one deft menu choice, she penetrates the souls of her dining compatriots, knowing what they all want without speaking it into existence. They want pancakes. They all want pancakes. But nobody at that table was going to order them for themselves. Pancakes are the immutable presence on every child’s dream breakfast plate—an easy go-to for many parents looking to feed their kids without much complaint: the combination of flour, buttermilk, and sugar produces something pillowy and recognizable, easy to eat and the perfect vessel for sweet sy...
