Andre Leon Talley, Fashion Journalist and Former Editor-at-Large of Vogue, Dies at 73 – Hollywood Reporter

André Leon Talley, the hugely influential fashion journalist and flamboyant former editor-at-large of U.S. Vogue, has died. He was 73. Talley’s literary agent David Vigliano confirmed his passing to The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday. Other details, including the cause of death, were not released. A towering figure in fashion, both literally given he was 6-foot-6 and figuratively due to a career that spanned six decades, Talley wrote about fashion at a number of publications including Women’s Wear Daily, W and even a brief stint at the New York Times. But it is American Vogue that he is indelibly associated with, serving variously as the magazine’s news director, creative director and as well as editor-at-large working closely with EIC Anna Wintour. A trai...

Britney Spears issues cease and desist letter to sister Jamie Lynn amid new book promo tour – Daily Mail

Britney Spears has sent a cease-and-desist letter ordering her sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, to stop talking about her. The 'Toxic' hitmaker's legal team want the 'Zoey 101' actress to stop discussing the 40-year-old pop star's life and struggles when she's giving interviews to promote her new memoir. Jamie Lynn is currently on a promotional tour for her new book 'Things I Should Have Said', which Britney's legal counsel said contains 'misleading and outrageous claims' about her. Now, lawyer Mathew Rosengart has written a stinging letter to Jamie Lynn, demanding that she 'cease and desist from referencing Britney derogatorily' and threatening 'all appropriate legal action' should the actress not comply.  'We write with some hesitation because the last thing Britney wants is to bring more att...

Brazils parents want their kids vaccinated against Covid. Bolsonaro has tried to stop it – CNN

Manuela had a fever that reached 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit), spots all over her skin and a lump growing out of her neck. Her kidneys didn't function for nearly two days. "Her heart almost stopped," Basto said. Manuela recovered from Covid, but its side effects have left a lasting impression on her heart: She now has arrhythmia, an irregular heartbeat. "It is so horrible. She was a healthy child, with no underlying conditions," Basto said. Manuela survived Covid. But hundreds of other children in Brazil haven't. Between March 2020 and November 2021, 308 children aged between 5 and 11 have died from Covid-19, according to data from the Ministry of Health. Pediatrician and infectious disease specialist Marcelo Otsuka told CNN that Covid has killed more children than meningitis and measle...

André Leon Talley, Ex-Vogue Editor and a Force in Fashion, Dies at 73 – The New York Times

André Leon Talley, the larger-than-life fashion editor who shattered his industry’s glass ceiling when he went from the Jim Crow South to the front rows of Paris couture, parlaying his encyclopedic knowledge of fashion history and his quick wit into roles as author, public speaker, television personality and curator, died on Tuesday. He was 73. His death, after a series of health struggles, was confirmed by his friend Darren Walker, the president of the Ford Foundation. “André Leon Talley was a singular force in an industry that he had to fight to be recognized in,” Mr. Walker said, calling him a “creative genius” and noting his ability to craft a persona for himself out of “a deep academic understanding of fashion and design.” Called “The Only One” by The New Yorker by virtue of his bei...

Something in Your Eyes May Reveal if Youre at Risk of Early Death, Study Shows – ScienceAlert

A quick and pain-free scan of the human eyeball could one day help doctors identify 'fast agers', who are at greater risk of early mortality. Getting older obviously has an impact on everybody's body, but just because two people have the same number of years under their belt doesn't mean they are physically declining at the same rate.   Looking deep into a person's eyes could be a far better way to measure their true biological age, and this could provide a glimpse into the future health of patients. A machine learning model has now been taught to predict a person's years of life simply by looking at their retina, which is the tissue at the back of the eye. The algorithm is so accurate, it could predict the age of nearly 47,000 middle-aged and elderly adults in the United Kingdom wit...

Maple Has a Surprisingly Savory Side

The Quebecois arc of taste is assumedly saccharine; Quebec produces more than two-thirds of the world’s maple supply. I still remember, years ago, between attending a Habs game and eating late-night poutine at La Banquise, when I stumbled upon my first taste of tire d’érable during the Montréal en Lumière festival. The confection is made by pouring boiling-hot maple syrup over fresh snow, an à la minute taffy that is then rolled onto a wooden tongue depressor like a lollipop. It’s shtick like this that’s hard to escape when you’re surrounded by maple. It was Derek Dammann, the chef and owner of Montreal’s Maison Publique and McKiernan Luncheonette, who took me to my first cabane à sucre (sugar shack) a decade ago. These establishments were once ...

Britney Spears Issues Cease and Desist Letter to Jamie Lynn – Rolling Stone

Britney Spears has sent her little sister Jamie Lynn a big warning. In a new “cease and desist” letter obtained by Rolling Stone, the “Toxic” singer’s lawyer Mathew Rosengart cautions that Britney won’t hesitate to file a lawsuit if her younger sibling keeps talking about her “derogatorily” during her promotional campaign for her new book. “We write with some hesitation because the last thing Britney wants is to bring more attention to your ill-timed book and its misleading or outrageous claims about her,” the new letter states. “Although Britney has not read and does not intend to read your book, she and millions of her fans were shocked to see how you have exploited her for monetary gain.” Rosengart says Britney “will not tolerate” the alleged profiteering. “You of all peo...

Yvette Mimieux, Who Found Fame With ‘The Time Machine,’ Dies at 80 – The New York Times

Ms. Mimieux was a child bride in “Toys in the Attic” (1963), based on the Tony Award-winning Lillian Hellman play. Mr. Crowther declared her performance “showy but without plausibility” in his Times review, which was not much nicer than what he said about her co-stars Geraldine Page and Dean Martin. In 1964, Ms. Mimieux turned her role as a doomed surfer with epilepsy on the television drama “Dr. Kildare” into a starring movie role with the show’s star: She was Richard Chamberlain’s too-nice-for-sex new bride in “Joy in the Morning” (1965). She also reputedly became the first actress to show her navel on television. Then her career took a downward turn. After a foray into series television, solving murder cases as Ralph Bellamy’s bright young criminologist partner in “The Most Deadly Game...

Tom Williams | CQ-Roll Call, Inc. | Getty Images Infectious disease experts have warned that it's too soon for the public to stop taking steps to avoid Covid-19 infection, despite health officials claiming it's inevitable most people will catch the seemingly milder omicron variant. Many countries now have few or no Covid-related restrictions remaining, as surging case numbers are weighed against vaccination rates. The leaders of some European countries have called for the coronavirus crisis to begin its shift from pandemic to endemic, and be treated like the seasonal flu. In the U.K., where new c...
