What to expect as Ozark returns for its explosive final season – New York Post

“Ozark” is heading into the homestretch as the Byrdes take flight in the fourth and final season of the Netflix drama. “Every year we want our worlds to get bigger and bigger and, at the same time, emotionally, we want to circle back on the people you care about the most,” series showrunner Chris Mundy told The Post. “The Byrde family’s relationship with each other, their relationship with Ruth, her relationship with Wyatt — you want all these themes pointed at each other, and more intensely, as you go forward. “At a certain point, something is going to have to give … as the whole train is hurdling 100 miles per hour.” Season 4 premieres Friday (Jan. 21) and is divided into two seven-episode arcs. The action picks up where Season 3 e...

Sundance Review: Julianne Moore And Finn Wolfhard In Jesse Eisenberg’s ‘When You Finish Saving The World’ – Deadline

Although Jesse Eisenberg is well known to movie audiences due to starring in films like Zombieland and his Oscar-nominated role in The Social Network, he is becoming a force elsewhere in the arts with a series of plays, short stories, and New Yorker pieces all now leading to a smart, funny, knowing and entirely accomplished first feature as writer and director. When You Finish Saving the World, making its world premiere tonight at the (virtual) Sundance Film Festival, puts a different spin on familial relationships as it travels on two tracks centering on an activist-workaholic-socially concerned mother whose disappointment with her teenage son’s more frivolous pursuits leads her in surprising directions, just as that boy tries against all odds to pursue a bright and desirable girl...

Review of Freeforms Single Drunk Female – Vulture

Photo: Danny Delgado/Freeform “Please adult responsibly” is the promotional tagline for Freeform’s Single Drunk Female, and the broadness of that directive is a tell. Over its ten-episode first season, the series attempts a light touch, not just with alcoholism and the 12-step recovery process outlined by Alcoholics Anonymous, but also with grief, Zennial aimlessness, single parenthood, fertility challenges, and the criminal-justice system. Showrunner and creator Simone Finch (of The Conners) writes from her own experiences as a 20-something struggling to get sober, and details about losing time to the disease and the pressure to make amends fe...

UCSF scientists detect anomalies in people with post-COVID brain fog – San Francisco Chronicle

Scientists studying the persistent “brain fog” that plagues many people after a bout with COVID-19 are reporting, for the first time, abnormalities in the clear liquid surrounding the brain and spinal cord of several patients. The discovery of elevated protein levels in the cerebrospinal fluid suggests the presence of inflammation, while unexpected antibodies may reveal an abnormally activated immune system, according to small study led by UCSF and published Tuesday in the journal Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology. “It’s possible that the immune system, stimulated by the virus, may be functioning in an unintended pathological way” even though the virus was no longer present, said Dr. Joanna Hellmuth, a brain expert at UCSF’s Coronavirus Neurocognitive Study and...

Hold on to your jumpsuits — Netflix’s wildly popular Squid Game series has been confirmed by the company for a second season. During its fourth-quarter earnings call Thursday, Netflix’s co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos confirmed that the Korean miniseries is returning. Asked by Nidhi Gupta of Fidelity Management and Research whether the viewers would get a second season of Netflix’s most popular series ever, Sarados said there’s more grisly action to come. “Absolutely,” he responded. “The Squid Game universe has just begun.” Previously, Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed that the series would return, adding that he was in the “planning process.” Sarandos didn’t elaborate on when the series will return, or what an expanded Squid Game universe would look like. The Hottest Films for Sale at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival – Variety

Sundance may have been forced to cancel its plans to host an in-person festival, but the shift to a virtual event isn’t likely to stifle dealmaking. After all, the 2021 edition of Sundance saw films like “Passing,” “Summer of Soul” and “CODA” score record-breaking pacts despite the fact that all-night bidding wars were conducted over Zoom. This year’s festival has a number of high-profile features that should attract buyers’ attention, either because they feature A-list stars like Lena Dunham, Dakota Johnson and Regina Hall or because they deal with hot topics like abortion rights and religion. There are also a number of documentaries exploring everything from the rise of TikTok to the fight to prevent a climate change catastrophe that could score major sales. With streaming ser...

Early treatment could tame peanut allergies in small kids – Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Young children might be able to overcome their peanut allergies if treated at an early enough age, according to a study published Thursday. The researchers gave increasing amounts of peanut protein powder to a group of toddlers to build up their tolerance for peanuts. After 2 1/2 years, close to three-quarters could tolerate the equivalent of 16 peanuts without an allergic reaction. Six months after treatment stopped, one-fifth still had the same tolerance. The approach seemed to work best in the youngest children and those with milder allergies, the researchers reported Thursday in the journal Lancet. The findings suggest there’s “a window of opportunity” early in life when treatment could have a lasting impact, said Dr. Stacie Jones, a study co-author from the University...
