Picard’s first season 2 trailer has Guinan going for it – The Verge

Just when it seemed like Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard might have been ready to bid the galaxy farewell, Star Trek: Picard gave the legendary space explorer a second shot at life that raised some questions about just who and what he is now. While first trailer for Picard’s second season doesn’t directly answer any of them, it brings back one of the few characters perfectly suited to help guide Picard and his allies through this next chapter of their journeys. Beyond getting the recently resurrected Jean-Luc and his fellow explorers back aboard La Sirena and in the depths of space they long for, Star Trek: Picard’s second season is also about to send its heroes into the existential deep in as they embark upon a journey spanning across time and space, and seemingly multiple realit...

Peanut allergy could be tamed in some kids using oral immunotherapy: study – Fox News

If treated early enough, young children may be able to overcome their peanut allergies, according to researchers.  In a new study published Thursday in the journal The Lancet, a clinical trial funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that giving peanut oral immunotherapy to children ages 1 to 3 years old who are highly peanut-allergic induced remission of that allergy in one-fifth.  The authors gave toddlers daily increasing amounts of peanut protein powder to a group of toddlers for 2.5 years.  PEANUT ALLERGIES: WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE KIDS RETURN TO SCHOOL Nearly 150 children participated in the "IMPACT" trial at five academic medical centers. Only children who had an allergic reaction after eating half a gram of peanut protein or less were eligible to join the study. T...

More kids showing up to Austin-area hospitals with COVID-19 than ever before – KXAN.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Health leaders are painting a grim picture of the impacts the omicron variant has on children, saying more kids are showing up at Austin-area hospitals with COVID-19 than ever before. Douglas Havron, the executive director for the Capital Area of Texas Regional Advisory Council (CATRAC), which largely oversees hospital operations in the Austin area, said during the peak of the delta surge they had a then-record high 36 children admitted to area hospitals. Friday, they were reporting 46 admissions. Dakota Johnson calls out mom Melanie Griffith for sharing childhood photos – Page Six

She’s turning 50 shades of red thanks to her mom. Dakota Johnson admitted she gets totally embarrassed when Melanie Griffith shares childhood photos of her on social media. “I don’t like it, but I also don’t go on social media, so I don’t find out about it until it’s really baked into the internet, and somebody will send it to me like, ‘Oh, you were so ugly’ or ‘You were so cute when you had braces and a slicked-back ponytail,'” Johnson, 32, said on “The Late Late Show with James Corden” Thursday. She added, “I become like a 12-year-old and I’m like, ‘Mom, you can’t do that. We’ve had this conversation so many times!'” But the “How to Be Single” star, who does not have an Instagram account, said Griffith, 64, simply “doesn’t care.” Dakota Johns...

EXCLUSIVE I dont give a toss what Prince Andrew feels, hes a horrible, nasty man: Dukes ex-maid – Daily Mail

Former Buckingham Palace maid Charlotte Briggs today defended her Prince Andrew revelations and attacked him for being a 'horrible man.' Ms Briggs, 47, said she had no regrets about speaking out over the Duke's 'demanding and entitled' foul-mouthed rants, which she claimed left her in tears. Speaking to MailOnline in her hometown of Halifax, West Yorkshire, she said: 'I don't give a toss what Prince Andrew feels… he is a horrible, nasty man.' She added: 'It has been more than 26 years and I did sign (a privacy agreement) under the official secrets act. 'But my husband and I saw the TV programme during the week when his teddy bears were mentioned and he said it was a good time for me to speak about what happened to me too.' The mother of two said she had been criticised in her hometown tod...

Men and womens brains really do work differently – Daily Mail

It's often said that men and women's brains work so differently that one sex is from Venus and the other is from Mars. Well now a new study supports this hypothesis after finding 1,000 genes that are much more active in one gender than the other. It looked into how male and female mouse brains differ by probing areas that are known to program 'rating, dating, mating and hating' behaviours.  The behaviours — for example, male mice's quick determination of a stranger's sex, females' receptivity to mating, and maternal protectiveness — help the animals reproduce and their offspring survive. These differences are also likely reflected in the brains of men and women, the researchers from Stanford Medicine said.  A new study looked into how male and female mouse brains diff...

When Can People With Long COVID Return to Exercising? – Lifehacker

Photo: tpawat (Shutterstock) Returning to exercise after any physical setback is tough. You trust yourself to listen to your body, but it’s also tempting to get back out there before you’ve fully recovered. However, jumping back into your fitness routine too soon can cause more harm than good—and this is especially true if you’re dealing with the longterm effects of COVID-19. According to Michael Fredericson, MD in Everyday Health, “resuming physical activity after having COVID-19 has an extra layer of complexity because of the potential of complications, such as myocarditis,” which is inflammation of the heart muscle. And with all the uncertainties and complications surrounding “long COVID,” extra caution is needed. After a positive case, it may not be possible to tell the difference...

Booster Shots Instrumental in Fighting Omicron, CDC Data Show – The New York Times

Booster shots of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines aren’t just preventing infections with the contagious Omicron variant — they’re also keeping infected Americans from ending up in the hospital, according to data published on Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The extra doses are 90 percent effective against hospitalization with the variant, the agency reported. Booster shots also reduced the likelihood of a visit to an emergency department or urgent care clinic. The extra doses were most effective against infection and death among Americans aged 50 and older, the data showed. Over all, the new data show that the vaccines were more protective against the Delta variant than against Omicron, which lab studies have found is partially able to sidestep the body’s...
