Are omicron symptoms different for vaccinated and unvaccinated people? – WKRG News 5

FILE – Pharmacist Kenni Clark prepares a booster dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine during a vaccination clinic, Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021, in Lawrence, Mass. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa, File) (NEXSTAR) – In the month and a half since omicron started spreading across the U.S., we’ve learned a lot about what the variant looks and feels like. For many, especially the vaccinated, it seems to feel more like a bad cold than influenza or severe respiratory illness. While there haven’t yet been any major peer-reviewed studies of omicron symptom differences between vaccinated and unvaccinated people, doctors are reporting anecdotal evidence that show some differences. Dr. Maya N. Clark-Cutaia, professor at the New York University Meyers College...

Opinion | Exercise Is Good for You, Even if You Have a Mild Case of Covid – The Wall Street Journal

To exercise with Covid or not—that’s the question some fitness buffs are asking. The American College of Sports Medicine has suggested people under 50 who experience mild or no symptoms to rest for at least seven to 10 days after testing positive. Their recommendation appears to be motivated by the concern that even a mild Covid-19 infection may damage the heart and potentially cause sudden death during physical exertion. There’s little evidence to support this recommendation. Because exercise boosts the immune system, it may even help people bounce back faster from Covid.

Alpha, Delta and Now Omicron – 6 Critical Questions Answered As COVID-19 Cases Surge Across the Globe – SciTechDaily

The list of SARS-CoV-2 variants – each with its own unique qualities that give it an edge – just keeps growing. “The Conversation” Editor’s note: The omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has fueled a rapid surge in cases globally. We asked a team of virologists and immunologists from the University of Colorado Boulder to weigh in on some of the pressing questions that people are asking about the new variant. How is omicron different from previous variants? There are two key differences between omicron and previous variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that emerged in late 2019. Early data suggests that omicron cases are milder than infections caused by the delta variant. On the flip side, omicron is far more transmissible – meaning it spreads easier – than p...

Billions is the latest TV show to create a PR problem for Peloton – Engadget

This post contains spoilers for the sixth season of 'Billions.' Peloton can't quite escape the publicity headaches from TV shows featuring its products. According to The New York Times and The Verge, the premiere episode of Billions season six includes a scene that, like the Sex and the City follow-up And Just Like That, paints Peloton's Bike in a less-than-flattering light — if not quite as dire as before. The scene depicts Mike "Wags" Wagner (played by David Costabile) having a heart attack while riding his Peloton spin bike. Unlike the And Just Like That scene, however, Wagner survives — he even references the AJLT scene, telling staff that he's "not going out" like that character. Billions' executive producers told The Times the moment was filmed in spring 2021, months before AJLT...

How does COVID-19 cause people to lose sense of smell? And how many regain it? – ABC News

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, perhaps no symptom has been in the spotlight more than loss of smell. Estimates vary, but it's believed that as many as 96% of COVID-19 patients experience some or total loss -- but it's usually temporary. Most regain the sensation within weeks. Studies have suggested that anosmia, the medical term of the condition, is a better predictor of whether someone has the virus than other symptoms such as cough or fever. Researchers still don't fully understand how the virus causes loss of smell, but there are a few theories. "COVID is a brand new virus, so we don't have all the answers yet," Dr. Raj Sindwani, an otolaryngologist at the Cleveland Clinic, told ABC News. "Some time, we might know. But, right now, we really don't know. These are our best g...

The delta variant is infecting placentas, likely causing stillbirths – Salon

While the world is now suffering a surge in cases of COVID-19's omicron variant, the delta variant, previously the dominant strain, is still very much alive. Indeed, because more time has passed since delta first appeared in India in December 2020, more research is beginning to surface around how it differs from previous variants of SARS-CoV-2 — especially in pregnant people. In a new study published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases, researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital report that they detected the delta variant in the blood and placentas of women who had stillbirths and serious pregnancy complications. Previous studies have suggested that COVID-19 poses a threat to pregnant women and fetuses. But the new research adds to a suspicion that th...
