Researchers discover ‘antibody signature’ that may explain why some get long COVID – The Times of Israel

Researchers have discovered an “antibody signature” that can be used to identify patients who have a high risk of developing long COVID, a condition in which debilitating symptoms can persist for many months, The Guardian reported on Tuesday. Scientists believe that since the coronavirus causes the body to produce a long-lasting immune response that attacks the body instead of the virus, this could explain why some patients continue to have a variety of symptoms long after they are clear of infection. The syndrome can damage the body, including the brain, blood vessels, and liver — areas that exhibit the symptoms of what has become known as long COVID, including continued illness, fatigue or breathlessness in those who were infected and then recovered from the virus. The scientists found that 4% of people had lost their sense of smell entirely 18 months after COVID-19 recovery. However, “a third had a reduced ability to detect odors, and nearly half complained of parosmia, where the sense of smell is distorted,” according to The Guardian. The bottom line: About 65% of people who recovered from COVI...

Just Steam It

Cabbage is a gentle veggie at heart. Its petals are tight, curious, and crunchy, and its flavor is mild but sweet. Yet most recipes take an aggressive approach to coaxing the leafy vegetable out of its deep winter slumber, opting for aggressive acts of burning, charring, and searing to reach a state of caramelization. But the more delicate approach of steaming cabbage (be it napa, savoy, or classic green) has a lot of advantages that are often overshadowed by those other cooking techniques.
