Father of two, 31, refused heart transplant because he isnt vaxxed for COVID has heart pump fitted – Daily Mail

A 31-year-old father of two has undergone open heart surgery to fit a pump that will only keep him alive another five years after he was refused a transplant because he would not get vaccinated against COVID-19. DJ Ferguson underwent a procedure to fit a mechanical heart pump, called a left ventricular assist device, which will last for up to five years.  The device was fitted at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, where Ferguson was admitted in November, suffering from a hereditary heart condition that causes his lungs and heart to fill with blood and fluid. On Wednesday night his mother, Tracey; father, David; and girlfriend Heather Dawson - the mother of his children - told Fox News of their devastation at the hospital's refusal to grant Ferguson a transplant.   David Ferguson sa...

Rate of Myocarditis in Vaccinated Boys Slightly Higher Than Thought, Israeli Study Finds – The New York Times

Boys aged 12 to 15 have a small but increased risk of heart problems after receiving a second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, Israeli researchers reported on Wednesday. Myocarditis, or inflammation of the heart muscle, occurred in one of 12,361 boys of that age group within a week of receiving a second dose, the study found. The cases were mild, and the side effect remains uncommon. Moreover, several studies have shown that the risk of myocarditis after Covid is much higher than that after vaccination. Still, the Israeli figure is higher than the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate of one case per 16,129 vaccinated adolescents aged 12 to 17. Israeli researchers previously reported that nearly 11 of every 100,000 boys and men aged 16 to 29 were at heightened risk of m...

COVID symptoms: 4 signs you’ll get long COVID – Deseret News

There’s new research that hints at four different factors that could increase your chances of getting long COVID-19 symptoms. The news: A new study — published Tuesday in the medical journal Cell — identified four factors that can be found early in coronavirus infections. These factors are often seen in people who later developed long-lasting COVID-19 symptoms. In fact, the researchers said there’s a correlation between the factors and long-haul COVID, even if the infection was mild. Quote: “It’s the first real solid attempt to come up with some biologic mechanisms for long Covid,” said Dr. Steven Deeks, a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, told The New York Times. Why it matters: “They’ve identified these four major factors,” Deeks said. ...

‘Fight Club’ Author Chuck Palahniuk Says China’s Censored Ending Is Actually Truer to His Vision – Hollywood Reporter

Chuck Palahniuk, author of the original novel on which David Fincher’s 1999 film Fight Club was based, responded Wednesday to news that China dramatically altered the ending of the movie to conform with local censorship rules. The original 1999 film, which starred Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter, ends with the narrator (Norton) killing off his imaginary alter ego Tyler Durden (Pitt) and then watching as buildings explode across the city skyline, suggesting that his anarchist crusade to take down consumerist society has begun. A key tenant of China’s film censorship system is that criminals must always be punished for their crimes on screen and societal harmony restored. So, before the 20th Century Fox film began screening on Chinese streamer Ten...

Amy Schneider Can Finally Celebrate Her Jeopardy Win – The New York Times

OAKLAND, Calif. — When Amy Schneider’s 40-day “Jeopardy!” winning streak ended, she said she handed out thank you notes to the crew, briefly chatted with other contestants, then excused herself. “I went in the bathroom, cried for about 30 or 40 seconds, pulled myself together and headed out,” Ms. Schneider said from her sunny apartment in Oakland on Friday. The way she recounted her defeat mirrored the way she played on “Jeopardy!”: quickly, efficiently and with matter-of-fact warmth. “It wasn’t just a feeling of sadness, there was a sense of relief,” she added. “It was so exhausting.” Ms. Schneider’s continued success on the show meant that once her episodes started taping at the end of September, she was competing in five games a day, twice a week for several consecutive weeks, co...
