J.K. Rowling Cameos in Harry Potter Reunion, Trans Controversy Avoided – TMZ

Harry Potter and co. got together again for a trip down memory lane -- and even though J.K. Rowling doesn't sit for an interview herself ... she still magically appears (kinda). The author and creator of the wizarding franchise was notably absent for HBO Max's 20th Anniversary 'Return to Hogwarts' reunion special, which hit the airwaves Saturday ... just in time for the new year. While JKR did not appear in person to mingle with the rest of the cast and crew -- including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint -- she was there in spirit ... but more specifically, there in old archival footage from a couple years ag...

Betty Whites fans feared her death for years. But the Golden Girls actress wasnt afraid of dying. – The Washington Post

As she morphed into one of the most endearing and enduring faces on television, White acknowledged in her 1987 autobiography that her “list of fears keeps growing until I begin to wonder if I have always been chicken.” Among her deepest individual fears was dying, a topic, she wrote, that was handled gracefully by her parents. The way her parents first handled the loss of White’s pet made the death of her grandmother “a little easier to comprehend,” she wrote in “Betty White In Person.”

Younger adults are driving SoCal’s coronavirus surge – KTLA Los Angeles

Southern California entered 2022 in the midst of a rapid upswing in coronavirus cases from the Omicron variant, with adults ages 18 to 49 transmitting the virus at a high rate and officials urging the public to curtail holiday weekend gatherings to help slow the surge. Los Angeles County recorded more than 27,000 new cases on the final day of 2021, far above last winter’s peak average of 16,000 cases a day. Nearly 1 in 4 people who are being tested are positive for a coronavirus infection, officials said. The daily totals of new coronavirus cases are doubling every two days. On Tuesday, 9,473 cases were reported; Wednesday, 16,510; Thursday, 20,198; and Friday, 27,091. The positive test rate for the most recent seven-day period was 22.4%, double what it was for the week...

Study suggests omicron symptoms more mild due to less lung damage | TheHill – The Hill

The highly transmissible omicron variant of the coronavirus causes milder symptoms because it has a less severe impact on the upper respiratory system, according to new research. A consortium of researchers from America and Japan released a study last month revealing omicron causes less damaging effects on the lungs, nose and throat. The study was conducted on mice and hamsters and is under review for publication in a Nature Portfolio journal. In the study, researchers said omicron results in a "lower viral burden" in animals' upper respiratory systems, making its viral load and replication in those tracts milder and thus less damaging. The study demonstrates "attenuated lung disease in rodents, which parallels preliminary human clinical data," researchers concluded. The news...

Miley Cyrus smoothly covers for a wardrobe malfunction in New Years Eve show – CNN

During her "Miley's New Year's Eve Party" on NBC, Cyrus lost part of her silver top while transitioning between songs. She held it in place, turned her back to the camera, then exited the stage while her band and backup singers played "Party in the U.S.A." Cyrus barely missed a beat, quickly returning to the stage in a red jacket she had been wearing earlier in the show. "Everybody's definitely looking at me now," Cyrus sang, adapting the lyrics to her 2009 hit. "I'm still in the most clothes that I've ever worn on stage," she added. Cyrus even turned the moment into a lesson for the new year. "Tonight's show was all about being flexible, rolling with the punches, and making the best out of even the worst circumstances. And that resilience shouldn't end here. Let's bring that into t...

COVID-19: As Omicron Spreads, Two New Signs Emerge You May Be Infected With Virus – Stamford Daily Voice

Considering its rapid spread across the globe, it may seem hard to believe that it's only been about five weeks since the highly contagious COVID-19 Omicron variant was reported to the World Health Organization from South Africa. That happened on Wednesday, Nov. 24 after the first sample of the strain formally known as B.1.1.529 came on Tuesday, Nov. 9. Since Omicron's emergence, a series of studies as well as anecdotal evidence from those infected, have provided a set of symptoms, with a cough, runny nose, sore throat, and fatigue among the most common, with others, including loss of taste and smell, muscle aches and headache, also emerging. Since COVID itself was first identified in late 2019, its initial list of symptoms has swelled as well as the v...

Will omicron delay the end of the pandemic — or speed it up in 2022? – Vox.com

With omicron rates soaring, you may find yourself despairingly asking when — or even if — this pandemic is ever going to end. The good news is that it will end. Experts agree on that. We’re not going to totally eradicate Covid-19, but we will see it move out of the pandemic phase and into the endemic phase. Endemicity means the virus will keep circulating in parts of the global population for years, but its prevalence and impact will come down to relatively manageable levels, so it ends up more like the flu than a world-stopping disease. For an infectious disease to be classed in the endemic phase, the rate of infections has to more or less stabilize across years, rather than showing big, unexpected spikes as Covid-19 has been doing. “A disease is endemic if the reproductive n...
