‘Jeopardy!’ Keeps Seeing Winning Streaks. Champions Ponder Why. – The New York Times

When Amy Schneider became the fourth contestant in the history of “Jeopardy!” to surpass $1 million in winnings in regular-season play on Friday, she extended her winning streak to 28 games. It was a remarkable milestone for Schneider, who last month became the woman with the most consecutive wins on the program. Her victory came as long winning streaks have grown more common on “Jeopardy!” — there even seem to be streaks of streaks. Earlier this season Matt Amodio won 38 consecutive games, the second-longest run in the show’s history. The player who beat him, Jonathan Fisher, ended up winning 11 games in a row, a rare feat in itself. Since “Jeopardy!” got rid of a rule in 2003 that had limited contestants to no more than five wins in a row, only a dozen contestants have managed to win 1...

Why your COVID test may not reveal what strain you have – KHON2

(NEXSTAR) – Amidst the holidays, many Americans have been rushing to get a COVID-19 test. The demand has been so great that lines stretching for blocks have been seen around the country and retailers have imposed shopping limits on available at-home tests. Starting later this week, some at-risk Americans become eligible for a 4th Covid shot. – The New York Times

For immunocompromised people who received a single shot of the coronavirus vaccine made by Johnson & Johnson, the C.D.C. does not recommend additional primary doses, but advises that they get a booster shot of the Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines two months after the first dose. Some people are born with absent or faulty immune systems, and in others, treatments for some diseases like cancer diminish the potency of immune defenses. The C.D.C. estimates there are about seven million immunocompromised individuals in the country. Many of them produce few to no antibodies in response to a vaccine or an infection, leaving them susceptible to the virus. When they do become infected, they may suffer prolonged illness, with death rates as high as 55 percent. It is unclear what proportion...
