Oscars: 2022 Ceremony Will Have a Host – Hollywood Reporter

The 94th Academy Awards, scheduled to air on ABC March 27, will be the first since the 90th, in 2018, to have a host. “You heard it here first,” Craig Erwich, president Hulu Originals & ABC Entertainment, said during ABC’s portion of the Television Critics Association virtual press tour on Tuesday. It was announced earlier Monday that Glenn Weiss will direct the Oscars telecast — his seventh consecutive time doing so — with Will Packer serving as producer. Jimmy Kimmel, ABC’s resident late night talker, hosted the Oscars in 2017 and 2018, with 26.62 million people tuning in for the latter telecast. Ratings for 2019’s hostless Oscars actually rose to 29.56 million, before falling in 2020 to 23.64 million and then plummeting last year to 10.40 million. ...

Quanta Magazine – Quanta Magazine

In the fall of 2019, the world began one of the largest evolutionary biology experiments in modern history. Somewhere near the city of Wuhan in eastern China, a coronavirus acquired the ability to live inside humans rather than the bats and other mammals that had been its hosts. It adapted further to become efficient at spreading from one person to the next, even before the body’s defenses could rise against it. But the evolutionary chess game didn’t stop there, and we have a Greek alphabet soup of SARS-CoV-2 variants to prove it. Researchers around the world are trying to understand the virus’s evolution in more detail, and particularly how mutations in SARS-CoV-2 alter its ability to spread among humans. “A well-adapted virus today could be maladaptive tomorrow as the host develops re...

A life-enhancing elixir? Olive oil linked to lower death risks from Alzheimers disease, all causes – USA TODAY

Adding olive oil to your diet could lower your risk of Alzheimer's disease, cardiovascular disease and cancer, new research suggests. The health benefits of olive oil have long been touted – olive oil is packed with healthy fats, nutrients and antioxidants – and it's a vital ingredient of the Mediterranean diet. This new research, published in the peer-reviewed Journal of the American College of Cardiology, suggests the potential of including olive oil in your diet. The study, led by researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, studied the health and diet of 60,582 women and 31,801 men in the U.S. from 1990 to 2018. During the 28 years studied, those who said they consumed more than a half tablespoon of olive oil daily had 19% lower risk of all causes of death, as well as...

Grand Ole Opry Under Fire For Morgan Wallen Performance – HuffPost

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Morgan Wallen stepped on country music’s most historic and storied stage over the weekend, a sign that many interpreted as the Grand Ole Opry giving the troubled star its blessing and a path to reconciliation after using a racial slur on camera. While the country star’s return to the public eye seemed inevitable, a tweet from the Opry about Wallen surprising fans at its regular Saturday broadcast show led to heavy criticism of the mostly white institution and its history as a gatekeeper. Performers ranging from Yola, Allison Russell, Rissi Palmer, Noelle Scaggs of Fitz and the Tantrums, Joy Oladokun, Chely Wright, as well as Grammy winners Brandi Carlile and Jason Isbell, weighed in on how the Opry’s decision could have troubling consequences for artists of color ...

Elvis Costello says he will no longer perform Olivers Army, which contains a racial slur – CNN

Costello will no longer perform the song "Oliver's Army," a 1979 hit in the UK that contains the N-word, and has implored radio stations to stop playing it, too, in an interview with the Telegraph. "Only takes one itchy trigger; One more widow, one less white [N-word]," Costello sings in the political anthem, inspired by the Troubles in Northern Ireland and his encounters with young soldiers involved in the conflict. "If I wrote that song today, maybe I'd think twice about it," he told the Telegraph. "That's what my grandfather was called in the British army -- it's historically a fact -- but people hear that word go off like a bell and accuse me of something that I didn't intend." The song was long played uncensored on UK airwaves until 2013, when a BBC station bleeped ...

Why You Need Instant Gratification, According to Science – Lifehacker

Photo: Gorenkova Evgenija (Shutterstock) Many of us have goals we want to achieve, whether it’s to eat healthier, work out more, read more books, or other things that we feel we should be doing. Usually, when we think about working toward our goals, we imagine making hard sacrifices along the way—waking up early to go to the gym, spending extra time meal-prepping, and so on. But unless there’s some form of instant gratification in your actions, it’s probably not going to last for the long-term. As Wendy Wood, a professor at the University of Southern California whose research focuses on habit formation, told Knowable Magazine last year, “The rewards for habit formation need to be immediate.” Habit formation is facilitated by the neurotransmitter dopamine As Wood explains in her book ...

CDC study highlights just how little risk COVID is to the vaccinated – New York Post

If you’re still not convinced about getting vaccinated, or still believe that we need restrictive mandates to fight COVID, then you should take a look at the latest study by the CDC, highlighted by director Dr. Rochelle Walensky. The agency looked at 1,228,664 people who were vaccinated between December 2020 and October 2021 … Of those, 2,256 developed COVID, or 0.1% Of those, 189 had a serious outcome, or 0.01% Of those, 36 died, or 0.0029% Roughly 28 of those who died had four or more comorbidities, including immunosuppression, diabetes, and chronic kidney, cardiac, pulmonary, neurologic and/or liver disease. In short, if you’re vaccinated, the risk of death, or even hospitalization, from COVID is infinitesimally small. Like being-struck-by-lightning-in-your-l...
