California Hospitals Find Omicron Causes Fewer Hospitalizations, Shorter Stays – The New York Times

A new study of nearly 70,000 Covid patients in California demonstrates that Omicron causes less severe disease than other coronavirus variants. The new research, posted online Tuesday, aligns with similar findings from South Africa, Britain and Denmark, as well as a host of experiments on animals. Compared with Delta, Omicron infections were half as likely to send people to the hospital. Out of more than 52,000 Omicron patients identified from electronic medical records of Kaiser Permanente of Southern California, a large health system, Dr. Lewnard and his colleagues found that not a single patient went on a ventilator during that time. “It’s truly a viral factor that accounts for reduced severity,” said Joseph Lewnard, an epidemiologist at the University of California, Berkeley, and an ...

Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson hit outlet mall for caramel apples, frozen bananas – Page Six

There’s always money in the banana stand. Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson indulged their sweet teeth in California Monday, hitting the Camarillo Premium Outlets mall — seeming bodyguards in tow — for a sugar fix. “They were in Camarillo on Saturday and stopped into the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory to get caramel apples and frozen bananas, like she always does when she’s out there,” a source exclusively told PageSix. A photo of the couple was first shared by DeuxMoi, and was later picked up by the North West spoof Instagram account, @NorisBlackBook, but contrary to other reports, the Skims founder, 41, and the “Saturday Night Live” player, 28, did not hit any of the other stores in the mall. Much like the film stock that we use this season, which is also different, it's high contrast, meaning the highs are high, the lows are low. And when it's funny, it's really funny. And when it's painful, it's really painful." Zendaya plays Rue on the coming of age HBO series, about a group of high school students. The series also stars Maude Apatow, Eric Dane, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Barbie Ferreira, Nika King, Storm Reid and many more. The season season premiered on Sunday. COVID-19 May Increase Risk of Diabetes in Children, Study Finds – Prevention.com

Children who contract COVID-19 are up to 2.66 times more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes than their peers, a new CDC study reports. This is unique to COVID-19—other acute respiratory illnesses were not as strongly correlated with diabetes diagnoses. Experts recommend disease prevention measures, especially vaccinations and boosters for those who are eligible, to curb the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Children who contract COVID-19 are significantly more likely to develop type 1 or type 2 diabetes more than 30 days following their illness than their peers who weren’t infected, according to a major new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The research reviewed data collected from over 2.5 million pediatric patients between the ages of 0 and 17 from March 202...

Even Mild COVID Infections Can Have Lasting Impacts Like ‘Chemo Brain, Study Finds – NBC New York

Even a mild infection with COVID-19 can cause "profound" cellular effects in the brain with long-term impact on memory and executive function, according to a new study released Monday. The pre-print study from authors at Stanford, Yale and New York's Mount Sinai, which has not yet been published or peer-reviewed, found that people infected with COVID can frequently suffer neurological impacts similar to those who've undergone treatment for cancer -- a condition known as cancer therapy-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) or "chemo brain." "(The) findings presented here illustrate striking similarities between neuropathophysiology after cancer therapy and after SARS-CoV-2 infection, and elucidate cellular deficits that may contribute to lasting neurological symptoms f...
