SAG Awards Nominations Analysis: What Happened to Kristen Stewart and the ‘Belfast’ Boys? – Hollywood Reporter

Talk about all over the place! This year’s SAG Awards film nominating committee, comprised of 2,500 people chosen at random from SAG-AFTRA’s overall membership, revealed its nominations on Wednesday morning — they voted between Dec. 6 and Jan. 9 — and offered a lot of conflicting signs. In the highest-profile category, best ensemble (which many voters treat as an equivalent of best picture), the nom-com selected the mostly Irish cast of Belfast, the largely deaf cast of CODA, the very diverse cast of King Richard and the overflowing-with-A-listers casts of Don’t Look Up and House of Gucci. A best ensemble nomination is a nice way of recognizing all of the performers who worked on a film, which might explain why the nom-com then elected to recognize, in its indiv...

Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson spotted cuddling during drugstore run – Page Six

Keeping it real. Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson went on yet another low-key date Tuesday night, complete with a pizza pie that cost less than $20 and a run to a local Rite Aid. Paparazzi snapped the couple sneaking out through the back door of Jon & Vinny’s Fairfax in Los Angeles, which has a much more casual vibe than celebrity hotspot Carbone in New York City – a favorite of Kardashian’s ex Kanye West. Kardashian, 41, and Davidson, 28, sat together on one of the wooden booths at the diner, while they chowed down on a Margherita pie that only set them back $17.75. They then made their way over to a drugstore for dessert, where the pair picked up some ice cream. While inside Rite Aid, the Skims founder and “Saturday Night Live” star were...

Ronnie Spector, 60s icon who sang Be My Baby, dies at 78 – Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Ronnie Spector, the cat-eyed, bee-hived rock ‘n’ roll siren who sang such 1960s hits as “Be My Baby,” “Baby I Love You” and “Walking in the Rain” as the leader of the girl group The Ronettes, has died. She was 78. Spector died Wednesday after a brief battle with cancer, her family said. “Ronnie lived her life with a twinkle in her eye, a spunky attitude, a wicked sense of humor and a smile on her face. She was filled with love and gratitude,” a statement said. No other details were revealed. Tributes flooded social media, with Stevie Van Zandt saying it was an honor to produce her, to Brian Wilson, who wrote on Twitter: “I loved her voice so much and she was a very special person and a dear friend.” Diane Warren called her “The voice of a million teenage dreams including m...

When Will COVID-19 Pandemic Become Endemic? Experts Share Scenarios – NBC New York

The staggering spike in COVID-19 cases nationwide fueled mainly by the highly contagious omicron variant has many Americans questioning how long it will take for the pandemic to finally subside for good. While no crystal ball can provide an exact timeline, several medical experts help lay out what the future might hold. The changeover for an infectious disease from a pandemic to an endemic occurs when the virus is found regularly in a particular area or among people. The key difference in an endemic condition is that the virus is more manageable with greater population immunity. The common cold and flu are examples of endemic viral infections that are frequently encountered by the public. Medical Director for Infection Prevention at the Mount Sinai Health System, Dr...

Bill Gates says COVID-19 vaccines are missing two key things – Fox Business

Novavax CEO Stanley Erck says the company is in the process of manufacturing 'quite a bit of doses and getting them out' and notes that the vaccine will be 'very effective' against the omicron strain. Bill Gates, who donated $1.75 billion to COVID-19 vaccine development and fighting the pandemic, said this week that while the currently available vaccines prevent severe illness and death, they aren't durable enough and should be better at preventing infection.  The Microsoft founder, whose net worth Forbes pegs at $135.9 billion, made the comments in a Twitter discussion with Devi Sridhar, the chair of global public health at the University of Edinburgh Medical School.  "The vaccines we have prevent severe disease and death very well but they are missing two key things...

Compounds in hemp can help control COVID-19 spread, researchers say – WGN TV Chicago

by: Ian Costello, Nexstar Media Wire Posted: Jan 12, 2022 / 02:28 PM CST / Updated: Jan 12, 2022 / 03:45 PM CST PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Could hemp be a secret ingredient in the fight against COVID-19? According to the newly released results of a study at Oregon State University, the answer to that question is promising. Scientists at the school in Corvallis say they’ve determined that compounds contained in hemp show “the ability to prevent the virus that causes COVID-19 from entering human cells.” According to the release from the university, those hemp compounds are commonly found in such products as make-up, lotions, dietary supplements and food. Researchers determined that two cannabinoid acids found in hemp can...

Ben Affleck started directing because of Gigli – The A.V. Club

Ben Affleck and Jennifer LopezPhoto: Kevin Winter/Getty Images (Getty Images) Ben Affleck is sharing some reflections on his iconic box office flop, Gigli, and how it led him to ultimately start directing films. The actor graces the cover of the new issue of Entertainment Weekly and was subjected to a hard-hitting interview with his best friend Matt Damon. Affleck explained that he signed on to Gigli, which cost an estimated $75 million and made $7 million, because he loved and respected director Martin Brest’s previous work. “There was wonderful stuff in there,” he said of the movie, which costarred his then- and now-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez. “There are things where my daughter will be like, ‘This is ableist and disgusting,’ and okay. The way we see stuff has changed a little bit,...

Sources: Simon Cowell, Lauren Silverman in ‘crisis’ before engagement – Page Six

Guess she’s got the “X Factor.” As Page Six has revealed that Simon Cowell and girlfriend Lauren Silverman are getting married after 12 years and one child together, insiders suggest that the engagement may be a last-gasp effort to save their relationship. “Around Christmas I know that she was talking about it, and he was refusing,” a source told The Post. “They had reached a difficult point in the relationship — you might call it a crisis. There was misery. “Perhaps she had made it clear that she was not going to stick around unless they got married.” Silverman, 44, has reportedly been waiting a long time for her ring. In fact, the source said, this is actually their second engagement. The first was not long after the birth of their son Eric, now s...

Holy bummer! Ben Affleck on the awful experience of making Justice League – New York Post

It was filming “Justice League” that made Ben Affleck want to hang up his Batman cape. “It was really ‘Justice League’ that was the nadir for me,” Affleck, 49, told the Los Angeles Times about shooting director Zack Snyder’s 2017 movie. “That was a bad experience because of a confluence of things: my own life, my divorce, being away too much, the competing agendas, and then Zack’s personal tragedy [with his daughter committing suicide during the filming] and the reshooting. It just was the worst experience. It was awful.” The whole experience turned Affleck against playing the Caped Crusader. “It was everything that I didn’t like about this,” he said. “That became the moment where I said, ‘I’m not doing this anymore.’ It’s not even about, like, ‘Justice League’ was ...

Ketamine Shows Promise for Helping People With Alcohol Addiction – Gizmodo

Photo: Sascha Schuermann/DDP/AFP (Getty Images) New research suggests that ketamine may help people struggling with alcohol addiction. The small randomized, controlled trial found that people with severe alcohol use disorder given infusions of ketamine reported more days of abstinence at a six-month follow-up than those in a control group. The benefits also appeared to be greater for people given ketamine in addition to psychotherapy. Ketamine has long been used as a sedative for both people and animals, and is sometimes taken as a recreational drug with hallucinogenic effects. In recent years, it’s taken on another identity as a depression treatment. Since 2019, the Food and Drug Administration has approved a modified version of ketamine, available as a nasal spray, for treatment-res...
