Omicron Appears to Have Peaked in U.K., Offering Hope the Wave Is Receding – The Wall Street Journal

LONDON—The U.K. appears to have passed the peak of the latest wave of Covid-19 caused by Omicron, a promising sign that the highly transmissible variant’s impact may be brief, if intense, and fueling optimism that the pandemic may be waning. Scientists say British data offer encouraging signs for countries behind the U.K. in the Omicron wave—such as the U.S.—that the variant is echoing the pattern it followed in South Africa, where cases rose rapidly over the course of just over a month, before falling back.

Olive oil can cut risk of disease, help you live longer, study says – Fox News

A new study has found that olive oil could help you live longer.  The study, published on Monday in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, found that people who consume more than half a tablespoon (7 grams) of olive oil per day have been found to have a lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurodegenerative disease and respiratory disease.  Researchers also found that people live longer when they replace 10 grams per day of margarine, butter, mayonnaise and dairy fat, with olive oil.  THE BEST DIETS OF 2022: REPORT For the study, researchers – led by Marta Guasch-Ferré, a senior research scientist at the Department of Nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health – analyzed 60,582 women and 31,801 men who were participants in the Nurses' Healt...

Biden pledges 500M more tests; Bill Gates says COVID will soon be like seasonal flu. Live updates. – Yahoo News

The omicron variant should create a wealth of immunity for at least the next year and annual COVID-19 shots will probably be needed for "some time," Bill Gates says. "Once Omicron goes through a country then the rest of the year should see far fewer cases so COVID can be treated more like seasonal flu," Gates tweeted during a Twitter QandA with Devi Sridhar, chair of global public health at the University of Edinburgh, earlier this week. Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, said a "more transmissive variant" than omicron is not likely to emerge. But he acknowledged that COVID-19 has provided numerous surprises during the pandemic.  Fueled by the omicron variant, the pace of newly reported COVID-19 in the United States is still rising. The country re...

Station Eleven wraps up its tale with one last reunion – The A.V. Club

Mackenzie Davis and Caitlin McRill FitzGeraldPhoto: Ian Watson/HBO Max One thing I love about Station Eleven is that for an apocalyptic novel, it’s not very interested in the mechanics of the world ending. The pandemic is much worse in the show’s world, and we all understand pandemics differently now than when the book first came out. We understand how vaccines can help other people and how connected our health is to that of others. So the metaphor is already there, in a way, but Station Eleven doesn’t dwell. It does not give us more sheets and studies to read about how the virus works. Instead, it knows the most compelling part of the story is simply in the connections between people. I was in glorious suspense watching “Unbroken Circle.” No, not for that Hamlet play (though the cost...

Bob Sagets friends John Mayer, Jeff Ross live stream emotional journey to bring his car home from LAX – Fox News

Bob Saget’s friends comedian Jeff Ross and musician John Mayer livestreamed their emotional journey bringing the late comedian’s car back home from the airport. The duo were good friends with Saget and were among the first to speak out about his death. As a result, they volunteered to retrieve his car after he drove it to LAX to catch a flight to Florida where he performed in a comedy show the night he died unexpectedly in his hotel room. While making the trip back to Saget’s home on the 405 Freeway, Ross took to Instagram from Mayer’s account and worked the camera while the singer drove.  The conversation got emotional at times as they both reflected on their friend, with Ross quickly cracking a joke every time it seemed like Mayer was about to cry behind the wheel. The singer opened ...

Scientists regrow knee cartilage with an electric current – Daily Mail

Electric knee implants could be the answer for millions of arthritis patients as scientists have been able to regrow cartilage with the help of electrical currents. Bioengineers in Connecticut have developed a tiny mesh implant, about half a millimetre thick, which generates tiny electrical currents when it feels pressure – a property known as piezoelectricity.    For arthritis patients with the implant, regular joint movement would cause the implant to generate an electrical field that encourages cells to colonise it and grow into new cartilage.  Arthritis is a common and painful disease caused by damage to a person's joints. Normally pads of cartilage cushion those spots, but injuries or age can wear it away.  As cartilage deteriorates, bone begins to hit bone, and everyday activities l...

Cannabis compounds may stop Covid infection, study suggests – syracuse.com

Researchers from Oregon State University published a study suggesting marijuana compounds known as hemp can prevent Covid from entering human cells, WDIV-TV reports. Richard van Breemen is the lead researcher at Oregon State’s Global Hemp Innovation Center, College of Pharmacy, and Linus Pauling Institute. He says hemp compounds known as cannabis Sativa are a source of animal feed, fiber, and food; hemp is also used in body lotions, cosmetics, dietary supplements, and food. In an OSU press release, the team of researchers found a way of blocking the coronavirus from infecting people when “cannabinoid acids bind to spike proteins of SARS-CoV-2,” the virus that causes Covid-19. “These compounds can be taken orally and have a long history of safe use in humans,” van Breemen said, accord...

Immune system vs. virus: Why omicron had experts worried from the start – Ars Technica

Looking over the list of mutations it carried, scientists could identify a number that would likely make the variant more infectious. Other mutations were even more worrying, as they would likely interfere with the immune system's ability to recognize the virus, allowing it to pose a risk to those who had been vaccinated or suffered from previous infections. Buried in the subtext of these worries was a clear implication: scientists could simply look at the sequence of amino ac...
