Sacramento County says omicron could peak in early February; Sheriffs office releases 200 from jails – KCRA Sacramento

Sacramento County’s public health officer said Thursday that a peak in the omicron surge is still likely to be a few weeks away with COVID-19 cases trending up and officials will be helping hospitals increase “surge capacity.” Hours later, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said that about 200 incarcerated people will be released early from the county's two jails to help combat a spike in cases there. Dr. Olivia Kasirye said Sacramento County’s COVID-19 case rate is now three times higher than it was at last year’s peak, and is forecast to peak in late January or early February. In the meantime, cases are spiking at schools and jails and people should do their part to help others by getting vaccinated against the virus or boosted if they are eligible, Kasirye told reporters duri...

Cannabis Compounds May Prevent Coronavirus Infection, Study Finds – NBC New York

Some of the compounds in cannabis may prevent the entry of the coronavirus into healthy human cells, according to a study published in the Journal of Nature Products.  The research was conducted at Oregon State University and led by Richard van Breemen, a scientist with Oregon State’s Global Hemp Innovation Center, College of Pharmacy, and Linus Pauling Institute. The study suggests two compounds found in commonly found in hemp -- cannabigerolic and cannabidiolic acid -- prevent coronavirus from entering cells that typically line internal organs and skin in a lab setting. In the study, these acids were able to bind to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein -- the same target used in COVID-19 vaccines and antibody therapy. Once bound, this step could block a critical step ...

The Sports Illustrated cover girl's sister, Aurora, made the allegations while recording her sibling's outfit, which she did not consider 'inappropriate' or 'offensive' to her.  Unexpected: Olivia Culpo's travel plans to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico hit a brief snag when she was nearly prevented from boarding an American Airlines flight due to her outfit 'I'm confused,' Aurora wrote und...

Bob Saget’s Car Picked Up At LAX By John Mayer, Jeff Ross In Video Tribute To Their Fallen Friend – Deadline

John Mayer and Jeff Ross remembered the late Bob Saget as they performed one final task for their friend – retrieving his car at Los Angeles International airport. The two posted an Instagram video Wednesday of their short road trip, which came three days after Saget’s unexpected death in Orlando at the Ritz-Carlton. He was 65. Saget was remembered as the pickup team tooled down the 405 Freeway on the way to the airport. “You know how effusive you have to be in your love for everyone in your life, for each and every person he loved to be told by another, ‘He loved you so much’? Everyone is held into place by Bob’s insistence on telling everyone how much he loved everyone,” Mayer said. “I’ve never known a human being on this Earth who could give that much love, indiv...

Prince Andrew stripped of royal patronages and military affiliations as sex abuse lawsuit moves ahead – CBS News

Britain's Prince Andrew has been stripped of royal patronages and military affiliations — with the queen's approval — a day after a U.S. district judge rejected his motion to dismiss a lawsuit brought by Virginia Giuffre that alleges he sexually abused her when she was 17.  "The Duke of York will continue not to undertake any public duties and is defending this case as a private citizen," a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said Thursday. All of his roles have been handed back to Queen Elizabeth and will be redistributed to other members of the royal family, according to a royal source. He also will no longer be using "His Royal Highness" in any official capacities.  Andrew's lawyers had argued that the lawsuit that is now moving ahead should be thrown out because of a 2009 deal that ...

Will COVID end soon? It will change after omicron, Bill Gates says – Deseret News

Bill Gates said the darkness from the omicron variant’s surge won’t last forever. Quote: “As countries experience their Omicron wave health systems will be challenged. Most of the severe cases will be unvaccinated people. Once Omicron goes through a country then the rest of the year should see far fewer cases so Covid can be treated more like seasonal flu,” Gates said in a Twitter Q&A. Why it matters: As the omicron wave appears to peak in parts of the Northeast, there are obviously questions about what happens next in the pandemic and what that means for all of us. Catch up quick: For weeks, scientists and experts have been saying something similar. The ongoing thought is that the omicron variant will provide enough immunity to make the coronavirus more endemic, accordi...
