OSU researchers suggest COVID may be nearing endemic level – KOIN.com

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The omicron variant is spreading quickly regardless of vaccination status, but researchers say they hope omicron is a light at the end of the tunnel for this pandemic. Chief medical adviser to the president, Dr. Anthony Fauci recently said “just about everyone” will get infected with the omicron variant, because it’s highly transmissible. Now, researchers at Oregon State University are saying that could very well be the key to making COVID-19 endemic. That means the infection is maintained at a baseline level. Experts say our current crop of flu and cold viruses are considered endemic. Doctor Chunuei Chi is a professor for global health at OSU. He says that other researchers might argue that more time needs to pass before we find out whe...

Omicron and the logic of testing – The Economist

Jan 15th 2022 ON DECEMBER 29TH Britain recorded 246,215 cases of covid-19, a number more than three times higher than the previous peak, a year ago. If Britain’s level of immunity was the same as in the winter of 2020, when almost no one had been vaccinated, this number of cases would constitute a new order of disaster. Many thousands of people would be dying every day. But thanks to vaccination, they are not. The share who die after testing positive for covid-19 is now roughly a twentieth of what it was last winter. Highest Paid Musicians of 2021: Bruce Springsteen, Jay-Z Top Earners – Rolling Stone

Of all the supposedly “pandemic-proof” jobs out there, here’s a surprising one: rock star. The world’s 10 highest-paid musicians of 2021 raked in a combined $2.3 billion, more than double what they were making on an annual basis in the years right before Covid-19. The coronavirus has decimated touring, with brutal effects for artists who rely on gigs as a primary source of income. But up in the stratosphere, icons from Bruce Springsteen to Paul Simon found other ways to cash in — namely by offloading their catalogs for nine-figure sums. “These are almost like pieces of art — there’s a finite number of real, super-high-quality hit songs from the past — and there’s this sort of all-out grab to own those rights,” says Josh Gruss, founder and CEO of Round Hill Music, which has spen...

Covid-19 immunity: How antibodies, B cells, and T cells tackle omicron – Vox.com

Over the past two years, the United States has seen more than 63 million Covid-19 cases, with some people infected more than once. More than 240 million people in the US have received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine. More than 60 million have received three. While Covid-19 infections are never a good thing, these numbers still add up to a glimmer of good news: A large majority of Americans now have some immunity against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19. That’s a big step toward defanging the disease. When the human body is infected by the virus or encounters a fragment of the pathogen in a vaccine, our immune systems change in subtle but important ways. Across a huge swath of the population, these changes could eventually help transform Covid-19 from ...
