Alice Sebold Apologizes to Man Wrongly Convicted of Raping Her – The New York Times

Alice Sebold, the best-selling author of the memoir “Lucky” and the novel “The Lovely Bones,” apologized publicly on Tuesday to a man who was wrongly convicted of raping her in 1982 after she had identified him in court as her attacker. The apology came eight days after the conviction of the man, Anthony J. Broadwater, was vacated by a state court judge in Syracuse, N.Y., who concluded, in consultation with the local district attorney and Mr. Broadwater’s lawyers, that the case against him was deeply flawed. As a result of the conviction, Mr. Broadwater, 61, spent 16 years in prison before being released in 1998 and was forced to register as a sex offender. In a statement posted on the website Medium, Ms. Sebold, who described the rape and the ensuing trial in “Lucky,” said she regretted...

Alice Sebold apologizes to exonerated man who spent years in prison for her rape – CNN

"First, I want to say that I am truly sorry to Anthony Broadwater and I deeply regret what you have been through," Sebold, the author of "The Lovely Bones," wrote in a statement posted on Medium.com. Broadwater, who has always maintained his innocence, was convicted of the rape in 1982 and spent 16 years in prison. He was denied parole at least five times because he wouldn't admit to a crime he didn't commit, according to his attorneys. He tried at least five times to get the sentence overturned, he told CNN. Last week, a New York State Supreme Court judge exonerated Broadwater and vacated his conviction and other counts related to it. The Onondaga County district attorney joined in the motion to vacate the conviction. Broadwater was convicted on two pieces of evidence -- Sebold's accou...

Jury sees video of Jussie Smollett in dry run a day before alleged hate attack – New York Post

CHICAGO — Embattled “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett was caught on surveillance video doing a “dry run” one day before his alleged hate crime attack, prosecutors said at his trial in Chicago Tuesday. Prosecutors contend the footage confirms the actor faked the Jan. 29, 2019, alleged attack with Nigerian brothers Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, who are expected to be key witnesses for the prosecution in the case. Smollett’s lawyers claim the actor was really attacked — by the two brothers. Prosecutors poked a hole in that claim Tuesday, revealing a text message sent by Smollett to one of the siblings a couple of weeks after the alleged attack, the Chicago Tribune reported. “Brother…..I love you,” Smollett wrote to Abimbola Osundairo on Feb. 14, 2019. “I sta...

"Kristina, you wanna keep secrets from me? I'm the mother," Amber was heard saying to Gary's wife off-camera as the reunion went off the rails. Amber Portwood and Gary Shirley appeared to be in a good place when the most recent "Teen Mom OG" wrapped up last week. By the end of tonight's reunion episode, however, that definitely was no longer the case. All season long, Amber has been struggling to connect with her daughter Leah, who feels her mother abandoned her over men in her life and during her time behind bars. While she hoped to go to therapy with Leah, Gary was against it. Eventually, he at least agreed to go see a therapist with Amber, who filled Shirley in on his ex's borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder diagnoses. FDA approves glowing tumor drug to help surgeons identify ovarian cancer cells – Fox News

Cytalux (pafolacianince), a drug that binds to ovarian cancer tissue and glows when exposed to fluorescent light, has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help surgeons detect ovarian tumors during surgical procedures in patients. A Purdue University spokesperson told Fox News that Philip Low, Purdue University's Presidential Scholar for Drug Discovery, invented the drug. Low described in a press release that when a surgeon turns on the near-infrared light during the surgery, "those lesions light up like stars against a night sky." "While many surgeries result in complete resection of all cancer tissue, a substantial fraction unfortunately leave buried or concealed tumor tissue behind, often resulting in recurrence of the cancer and sometimes even death," Low...
