How a little girl’s ‘growing pains’ turned out to be rare signs of cancer – New York Post

A couple was heartbroken to be told their daughter, 6, was riddled with cancer, after what they thought was just growing pains. Little Eden Smith, from Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, had been complaining of sore legs for a few weeks in spring this year. But when her health started to go downhill, doctors thought it would be safest to take some scans. Parents Jen, 46, and Lee, 47, never imaged they’d be given the heartbreaking news that their daughter had the late stages of neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer. Jen, said: “She didn’t just have a little bit of cancer – it was in her tummy (which we later learned to be the site of the main tumor), her back, her legs, her chest, the back of her head and above her eye.” The family desperately needs £280,000 ($...

Two hospitalizations were also reported, a resident in their 50s and one aged 80 or older. The first known case of the new Omicron variant in the U.S. was confirmed today in San Francisco, Calif. as health officials throughout the state stepped up surveillance testing and contact tracing to identify and control its spread. While there are not yet any known cases in Humboldt County, health officials are requesting doctors to ask their patients about their travel history so that they can identify and test those who may have been exposed. Travis Scott offered to pay for AstroWorld victims’ funerals. Half turned him down – The A.V. Club

Travis ScottPhoto: Jamie McCarthy (Getty Images for MTV/ ViacomCBS) Following the deadly crowd surge at AstroWorld that killed 10 and injured hundreds in November, rapper Travis Scott announced he would pay for the victims’ funeral. Half of them have since rejected the offer. Per Rolling Stone, the family of the youngest victim, nine-year-old Ezra Blount, was the first to refuse. Now, four others are saying, “no, thanks.” According to the attorneys representing the families, Scott’s offer was more about public optics than expressing remorse. “It was not an offer [the Hilgerts] were going to seriously consider,” Richard Mithoff, the lawyer representing 14-year-old John Hilgert’s family, told Rolling Stone. “Of all the things this case is about, that’s the least of any concern. This f...

Jacqueline Avant, Philanthropist and Wife of Music Producer Clarence Avant, Is Fatally Shot – The New York Times

“He’d always have a car pick me up and I thought: ‘Who is this guy?’” Ms. Avant said. “One day, I guess, he was really trying to win me over and, for some reason, he mentioned how much he had paid the Internal Revenue Service.” In the documentary, actors and producers who knew the couple marveled at the longevity of their marriage and their fierce loyalty to each other. “They look so amazing,” the actor Jamie Foxx said. “They still look like they’ve got wedding cake on their feet, like they just walked off a soul wedding cake.” Ms. Avant was a past president of the Neighbors of Watts, a charitable organization that threw star-studded benefits to support child care and other needs. She was also an elementary school tutor and an avid collector of Japanese lacquered boxes. Mr. Avant started ...

Why California isnt planning new restrictions for Omicron – Los Angeles Times

When the new Omicron variant became known last week, there was anxiety about whether it would lead governments to consider new restrictions just as the holidays arrived. And while the variant has now been detected in California, officials say that they don’t think they’ll need to implement significant new restrictions, saying travel plans can be pursued and policies already in place around masks and vaccine verification are the best path for combatting the new strain of the coronavirus. “This has been an extraordinarily long and challenging time, and people are right to feel fatigued,” Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said. “I think the best way to put all of this in perspective is we actually have a lot more powerful tools at our hand right now than we did last ye...

President Bidens HIV/AIDS strategy to include new emphasis on older Americans – USA TODAY

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden  unveiled on Wednesday a strategy for combating HIV/AIDS that the administration says will focus on the growing population of people with HIV who are aging, along with other changes. More than half of the 1.2 million people in the USA who are living with HIV are over age 50. The plan will recognize racism as a health threat, expand the focus on addressing issues such as homelessness that make it hard to fight HIV/AIDS and encourage reform of state HIV criminalization laws. "This is one area where we can get a lot more done, quickly," Biden said at a White House event recognizing World AIDS Day.  He said the goal of ending HIV transmission is "within striking distance." As in past years, a giant red ribbon  was hung on the north portico of the White House. ...
