‘The Power of the Dog’ Review: Wild Hearts on a Closed Frontier – The New York Times

The story turns on what happens when George marries Rose (Kirsten Dunst), a widow with a teenage son, Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee, who evokes the young Anthony Perkins of “Psycho”). Phil sees Rose as an opportunist and writes a letter of complaint to his parents, whom the brothers, more comically than fondly, refer to as the Old Lady and Old Gent (Frances Conroy and Peter Carroll). It’s a childish move, but in keeping with the infantilism that still shapes the brothers’ uneasy relationship and their awkwardness with outsiders, particularly women. Before Rose, the only other women at the ranch are a bosomy older cook and a girlish helper, both conveniently sexless. When Rose first enters the Burbank house, Campion meaningfully pictures her in its gloom, the character’s pale face flickering lik...

RHOM trailer: Larsa Pippen accused of trying to be the new Kim Kardashian – Page Six

“The Real Housewives of Miami” is coming back with a bang. The trailer for Season 4 of the Bravo-turned-Peacock series dropped on Tuesday and teases an explosive dinner party in which Adriana de Moura savagely compares Larsa Pippen to Kim Kardashian. “You left this group of women, come back with a butt as big as Kim Kardashian’s, trying to become the new Kim Kardashian, which you’re never going to be,” de Moura, 56, screams at Pippen, who stares back unamused. Pippen, 47, helped put “RHOM” on the map in 2011 when she starred as an original cast member, but she left the show after Season 1. The model and Kardashian, 41, used to be inseparable, but at some point in 2020, they had a falling out and unfollowed each other on social media. The “RHOM”...

US tracking of virus variants has improved after slow start – Associated Press

After a slow start, the United States has improved its surveillance system for tracking new coronavirus variants such as omicron, boosting its capacity by tens of thousands of samples per week since early this year. Viruses mutate constantly. To find and track new versions of the coronavirus, scientists analyze the genetic makeup of a portion of samples that test positive. They’re looking at the chemical letters of the virus’s genetic code to find new worrisome mutants, such as omicron, and to follow the spread of known variants, such as delta. It’s a global effort, but until recently the U.S. was contributing very little. With uncoordinated and scattershot testing, the U.S. was sequencing fewer than 1% of positive specimens earlier this year. Now, it is running those tests on 5% to 10% ...

Nurse, 21, says her family treats her like scum because she refuses to get the vaccine – Daily Mail

Nurses have suffered a huge backlash from their families and employers for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine, just months after they were showered with praise for risking their health while working through the pandemic.   'A year ago I was a hero, and now I'm being treated like scum,' Becca Pitt, a 21-year-old nursing assistant in Indiana who wants to get pregnant within three years, told Suzy Weiss on Bari Weiss' Common Sense substack blog.  She said she has fears over the vaccine's potential effects on her fertility and 'we don't know the side effects'. Pitts is not alone in her fears, despite the CDC assuring the public that there is no evidence the vaccines cause fertility issues in men or women. Another nurse spoke frankly to Weiss about being forced to quit rather than get the vaccine w...
