In a First, Scientists Used Personalized Brain Stimulation to Successfully Treat a Persons Severe Depression – Gizmodo

For some people with difficult-to-treat depression, a personalized, implanted device for the brain might provide relief when nothing else can, a new case study published Monday suggests. Researchers claim, for the first time, to have used custom-fitted deep brain stimulation to substantially alleviate a patient’s decades-long bout with severe depression. Though there are many questions about the feasibility of this technology on a large scale, they hope this could turn out to be an incredible advancement in the field. Deep brain stimulation, or DBS, is already successfully used to help manage neurological conditions including Parkinson’s disease and certain types of seizures. The concept behind DBS is to transmit electrical impulses to balance out the erratic patterns of brain activi...

Queen Elizabeth Speaks About Prince Philip 6 Months After His Death – HuffPost

Queen Elizabeth recalled fond memories of her late husband, Prince Philip, while speaking at the opening of Scottish Parliament on Saturday. It marked the first time the queen has spoken publicly about her late husband since his death in April at the age of 99.  “I have spoken before of my deep and abiding affection for this wonderful country and of the many happy memories Prince Philip and I always held of our time here,” the queen said. “It is often said that it is the people that make a place and there are few places where this is truer than in Scotland, as we have seen in recent times.” The queen and the duke were married for 73 years. The queen once referred to Philip as her “strength and stay” in an address made in honor of the couple’s golden wedding anniversary, which ma...

A ‘Pacemaker for the Brain’: No Treatment Helped Her Depression — Until This – The New York Times

Dr. Sheth said the first patient, given the device in March 2020, “is remarkably well” now, maintaining a relationship and becoming a father. To test for a placebo effect, researchers gradually stopped stimulation to one brain region without the patient knowing when. His depression “got worse and worse” said Dr. Sheth, until he needed “rescue.” After stimulation restarted, he improved, suggesting the effect “is definitely stimulation-related.” Several months ago, Sarah needed a rescue too. Shortly after entering a study phase where the device is either turned off or left on for six weeks without the participant knowing which, “the suicidal thoughts were back,” Sarah said. Her family tried to get her hospitalized, but hospitals were full. “Things were really bad,” Sarah said. “She did ha...

COVID: Priest saddened church follower hospitalised after taking ivermectin – Yahoo News

(AP file photo)SINGAPORE — The parish priest of Church of the Risen Christ on Monday night (4 October) said he was saddened by reports that one of the church followers had been hospitalised after consuming antiparasitic drug ivermectin to prevent COVID-19 infection, and cautioned against using such unproven therapies. His message came a day after Facebook user Vanessa Koh Wan Ling alleged that her mother had obtained and taken the drug, popularised by a number of US conservative media outlets as a cure for the coronavirus disease, on the advice of fellow churchgoers. Ivermectin is commonly used as a de-wormer for horses. According to Koh's post, the unnamed woman had suffered several ailments after taking the drug, including the inability to walk and stand, and was sent to the hospital. ...
