Many Saints of Newark cast on returning to iconic Sopranos universe: One of the hardest jobs – Fox News

The team behind "The Many Saints of Newark" had a unique challenge ahead of them when they had to cast younger versions of iconic characters from "The Sopranos." The flick is a prequel to the famed mob drama featuring younger versions of many of the original show's characters, including the late James Gandolfini's son Michael, who plays Tony Soprano – the role previously inhabited by his father. Gandolfini, 22, and several of his co-stars recently spoke with Fox News about taking on the roles so famously played by other actors. "It would still be grounded in the same character because you would see physically, Tony, but you would feel someone way different, way younger," the young star said. The Rolling Stones rock Pittsburgh with plenty of hits, energy – TribLIVE

The extension of the pandemic has kept several bands away from Pittsburgh this year. But it was going to take a lot more than the threat of covid-19 variants to prevent The Rolling Stones from coming to Pittsburgh, the latest stop on the group’s “No Filter Tour.” The show had originally been scheduled for June 2020 but was postponed by the pandemic. However, it was not going to happen a second time. Not even the death of the Stones’ longtime drummer Charlie Watts, just six weeks ago, could stop them from playing a rocking show before an estimated crowd of over 50,000 fans at Heinz Field Monday night. Drummer Steve Jordan has been filling in for Watts and did an excellent job of keeping the steady beat going. The Rolling Stones have been around a long time and their song catalogue...

World-First Brain Implant Successfully Treats Resistant Depression in a Patient – ScienceAlert

Depression can be a frighteningly relentless condition. Luckily, researchers around the world are constantly working on new treatment options, such as a newly designed brain implant for resistant depression.   Altogether, up to a third of people with depression don't respond or become resistant to treatment. No medication or therapy type seems to help. For those with such treatment-resistant depression, the future can look especially bleak.   This is what happened to Sarah, a 36-year-old woman who's had severe and treatment-resistant depression since she was a child. But a new proof-of-concept intervention has provided significant relief for Sarah, and could offer hope for many like her. The only catch? It requires a custom-designed 'brain pacemaker' for each person. "I was at the en...

Watch Live: Russia to Send Film Crew to Space — Time and Livestream Details – The New York Times

Yulia Peresild, a Russian actress, Mr. Shipenko and Anton Shkaplerov, a veteran astronaut who has completed three treks to and from the space station since 2011, are strapped inside the MS-19 capsule on their way to the space station. Ms. Peresild has spent months training for the mission. She auditioned for the role earlier this year in a competition with dozens of other actresses. Alyona Mordovina, the competition’s runner-up, was standing by as Ms. Peresild’s backup, and would have gone to orbit if something had prevented the primary crew from launching to space. The film crew will return to Earth on Oct. 17 along with Oleg Novitsky, an astronaut who’s been on the station since April. “Undoubtedly, this mission is special, we have people going to space who are neither tourists nor prof...

Watch the trailer for Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon – The Verge

HBO has released a teaser trailer containing the first real footage of House of the Dragon, its upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series. The show was announced two years ago and is based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire and Blood, a book that centers around the history of the Targaryen family and is set two centuries before the events of the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, which Game of Thrones was based on. The House of the Dragon trailer doesn’t reveal much about the show’s plot beats, but does demonstrate its impressive cast: actors including Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Sonoya Mizuno, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, and Olivia Cooke are all on board. As you’d expect, there appears to be a lot of sword fighting and references to dragons. The question, of course, is how many Game of T...

Estate of Henrietta Lacks sues biotechnical company for nonconsensual use of her cells – CNN

Lacks, a Black woman diagnosed with cervical cancer, had tissue taken from her cervix without her consent during a procedure at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1951. With the sample, a doctor at the hospital was able to create the first human cell line to reproduce outside the body. Lacks died later that year from cancer at the age of 31. The cell line, now known as HeLa cells, gave scientists the ability to experiment and create life-saving medicine like the polio vaccine, in-vitro fertilization and gene mapping and helped move forward cancer and AIDS research. But the lawsuit alleges that Thermo Fisher Scientific is knowingly profiting from the "unlawful conduct" of the Johns Hopkins doctors and that its "ill-gotten gains rightfully belong to Ms. Lacks' Estate." It argues that th...

Overload of Inflammatory Molecules “Trapped” in Micro Blood Clots May Cause Long COVID Symptoms – SciTechDaily

First evidence of inflammatory micro clots in blood of individuals suffering from Long COVID: This may be the cause of some of the lingering symptoms experienced by individuals with Long COVID. New research indicates that an overload of various inflammatory molecules, literally “trapped” inside insoluble microscopic blood clots (micro clots), might be the cause of some of the lingering symptoms experienced by individuals with Long COVID. This unexpected finding was made by Prof Resia Pretorius, a researcher in the Department of Physiological Science at Stellenbosch University (SU), when she started looking at micro clots and their molecular content in blood samples from individuals with Long COVID. The findings have since been peer-reviewed and published in the journal Cardiov...
