Uncontrollable vomiting due to marijuana use on rise, study finds – CNN

"They are writhing, holding their stomach, complaining of really bad abdominal pain and nausea," said Dr. Sam Wang, a pediatric emergency medicine specialist and toxicologist at Children's Hospital Colorado, who treats adolescents with the condition. "They vomit and then just continue to vomit whatever they have in their stomach, which can go on for hours," said Wang. "They often say they took a scalding hot shower before they came to the ER but it didn't help. "That's when we know we may have a case of cannabis hyperemesis syndrome, or CHS." The researchers followed nine of the patien...

Its Time to Get a Flu Shot – The New York Times

Last fall, as coronavirus cases climbed and the world hoped for vaccines, health experts feared influenza and Covid-19 would combine for a devastating “twindemic.” While pandemic measures appeared to keep the flu at bay, this year experts are again concerned, especially as some countries and state authorities roll back lockdown rules. Many officials and experts are urging the public: Do not dismiss the danger of the flu, and seek a flu vaccine. “This year we are guaranteed to have the flu, and we are going to have some version of a twindemic,” said Dr. William Schaffner, the medical director for the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. “It could really further strain an already extraordinarily stretched, strained, tired-to-the-bone health care system.” The United States is grappl...

Pepperoni Crumbs > Bacon Bits

Pepperoni gets the most guff of the cured meat family—always the Lunchables, never the crowning glory of the charcuterie plate. But these compact rounds of salumi have so much more to offer for the savvy home cook. They’re peppery, salty, and full of fat that can be rendered to turn them into crisp miniature UFOs. “It’s a quintessential Italian American ingredient—pepperoni is one of those things that people in the United States always associate with Italian food, but it’s rarely seen in Italy,” says Angie Rito, the co-owner of Manhattan’s Don Angie and the coauthor, with Scott Tacinelli and Jamie Feldmar, of Italian American. “The flavor profile of pepperoni is spicy and garlicky with a hint of smoke, and the ingredient has a familiar and nosta...

Iggy Pop on finding new music: ‘At my age, it helps to remain curious’ – The Guardian

Iggy Pop The source of the rocker’s enviable eternal youth? In the words of the man himself, it’s avidly rooting out new artists into his 70s (and beyond) Iggy Pop Fri 17 Sep 2021 09.00 EDT I keep reading that we decline in our 70s so I try to keep using my brain. Discovering new music opens my mind and the element of surprise keeps me connected. I feel like I’m mining for diamonds – and when you find the diamond, you know. When I heard Chaise Longue by Wet Leg I got really excited: it’s cheeky, with a wicked groove, but it’s the vocals – they’re almost metronomic. You could ask 100 people to sing it and it wouldn’t sound the same. The Guide: Staying In – sign up for our home entertainment tipsEver since my adolescence, I’ve got angry when the radio played something trite and felt good ...

My Husbands A Doctor. Heres Why Im Not Getting A COVID Shot – The Federalist

I have degrees in health policy and bioethics. I have worked for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. My husband is a physician in the U.S. Navy. Our two children are up-to-date on all of their vaccines per the American Academy of Pediatrics schedule. While we tend to be somewhat “crunchy” with our dietary and household product choices, we have by-and-large embraced modern medicine as a good thing. As a physician, my husband was part of the “first tier” eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine and got his shots in February. By the time the powers-that-be in California (where we are stationed) deemed vaccines available to my “tier,” I had found out that I was newly pregnant. With an eight-week miscarriage in my past, there was no way I was going to get vaccinated that early on with a shot s...
