Newman and Peggy Smith did everything they could to avoid COVID-19, including getting vaccinated. He died from the virus at LeConte Medical Center on September 1. GATLINBURG, Tenn — It was the sound of the mountains that first brought Peggy and Newman Smith together. She sang and played the dulcimer — an instrument he had always loved. He got her number from a friend and they immediately hit it off. "There was a dulcimer festival... he had called and we talked for an hour and a half," she said, adding that she normally didn't do that. "He was the most fascinating man I have ever talked with." ...

What Tennessees latest data on COVID-19 breakthrough infections means – Chattanooga Times Free Press

The proportion of serious and fatal COVID-19 infections among vaccinated Tennesseans is growing, but experts caution against using data on "breakthrough" infections — which occur when fully vaccinated people are infected by the coronavirus — to draw broad conclusions about vaccine efficacy. Unvaccinated Tennesseans continue to account for the majority of COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths in the state. But the proportion of patients who are fully vaccinated has increased threefold or more, according to the latest COVID-19 Critical Indicators report from the Tennessee Department of Health: — The vaccinated made up 13% of all COVID-19 cases in Tennessee in August, compared to 4% in May. — Among those hospitalized with COVID-19, 14% were vaccinated in August,...

Pepperoni Crumbs > Bacon Bits

Pepperoni gets the most guff of the cured meat family—always the Lunchables, never the crowning glory of the charcuterie plate. But these compact rounds of salumi have so much more to offer for the savvy home cook. They’re peppery, salty, and full of fat that can be rendered to turn them into crisp miniature UFOs. “It’s a quintessential Italian American ingredient—pepperoni is one of those things that people in the United States always associate with Italian food, but it’s rarely seen in Italy,” says Angie Rito, the co-owner of Manhattan’s Don Angie and the coauthor, with Scott Tacinelli and Jamie Feldmar, of Italian American. “The flavor profile of pepperoni is spicy and garlicky with a hint of smoke, and the ingredient has a familiar and nosta...

CNNs Lemon balks as Cuomo calls Ocasio-Cortez a poser for Met Gala dress stunt – Fox News

Media top headlines September 20 In media news today, a Slate journalist allegedly sent a draft of a story to Fusion GPS about a possible link between Trump and a Russian bank, media pundits get mocked for trying to make news out of 'dud' Capitol Hill rally, and the New York Times comes under fire for describing Iranian nuclear scientist as a 'lover of poetry' CNN hosts Don Lemon and Chris Cuomo argued last week about the efficacy of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's, D-N.Y., dress stunt at the Met Gala. On their podcast "The Handoff," Lemon gushed that Ocasio-Cortez's attention-grabbing "Tax The Rich" dress was "perfect" for her message. "And what she did was perfect. She went into the rich people’s houses. You don’t get any richer and more celebrity and elite, if you want t...

Maskless 2021 Emmys defended by Los Angeles County after criticism over lack of COVID-19 safety protocols – Fox News

Despite online backlash and a bit from presenter Seth Rogen, the 2021 Emmy Awards did not violate coronavirus safety protocols, the Los Angeles Department of Health says. The Sunday night broadcast caught flack online as the packed ceremony seemed to toss safety precautions to the wind. Very few – if any – masks were worn and social distancing was not in place between groups of people. When he presented an award early in the night, Rogen compared the event to being in a "hermetically sealed tin." Host Cedric the Entertainer later explained, however, that all attendees were vaccinated. In a statement to Fox News, the Department of Health explained that because of the nature of the event, the crowded venue was not in violation of any suggested safety guidelines. So Snoop Dogg just claimed to be a prominent NFT booster – The Verge

Snoop Dogg, the famous rapper, tweeted on Monday that he’s the one behind a Twitter account that discusses NFTs. Yes, this really is a thing that’s happened. While Snoop Dogg has released NFTs before, that’s not really anything new for celebrities — running a Twitter account that constantly tweets about crypto, and owning around a hundred of the crypto tokens, however, would be another level. Is this reveal real? A prank? It’s unclear, but it sure is interesting. @CozomoMedici (seemingly named after a prominent Renaissance-era Italian banker) is a Twitter account that’s amassed quite a few followers in the month or two it’s been active and talking about crypto. Part of what’s made the account splashy is that it’s seemingly spent millions on NFTs. The person behind the Medici accoun...

Saturday was the deadliest day for the COVID-19 pandemic in GA, new numbers show – WSB Atlanta

ATLANTA — New numbers from the state show Saturday is now the deadliest day of the COVID-19 pandemic so far. The state reported 191 new COVID-19 deaths. That’s five more than our previous high in February. That brings Georgia’s average of COVID-19 deaths to 103 people every day. But as deaths go up, cases continue to go down across the state. The Georgia Department of Public Health reported 9,490 new COVID-19 cases reported over the weekend. The seven-day average of cases is now at its lowest point in over a month. The numbers come on the same day as the U.S. met another grim milestone: COVID-19 has now killed about as many Americans as the 1918-19 Spanish flu pandemic did — approximately 675,000. The U.S. population a century ago was just one-third of what it is today, meaning the flu c...

Study Finds Recovery From Stroke May Depend On Optimal Timing Of Rehab : Shots – Health News – NPR

Everyday tasks — such as buttoning a shirt, opening a jar or brushing teeth — can suddenly seem impossible after a stroke that affects the brain's fine motor control of the hands. New research suggests starting intensive rehab a bit later than typically happens now — and continuing it longer — might improve recovery.
